  • Watch the big yellow clock. Drive through the CHECKPOINT gates and finish laps to add time.

An arcade racing game with a real countdown

Arcade Turbo Racer 3D brings back the feel of a racing cabinet at the arcade, where a big clock counted down and every checkpoint felt like a rescue. You line up with seven rival cars, the five red lights go out, and from that moment you are racing two things at once: the other drivers and the timer. Let the clock reach zero and it is game over, however well you were placed.

It runs in full 3D in your web browser, on a computer, tablet or phone. There is nothing to download, nothing to install, no account and no coins to pay. A race takes around two to three minutes, so it is easy to have one more go at a better score.

What makes a racing game "arcade"?

Arcade racing games and sim racing games want different things from you. A simulator asks you to brake at exactly the right marker, look after your tyres and treat every corner with respect. An arcade racer asks you to keep your foot down, throw the car sideways and grin. Cars grip harder than real ones, slides are easy to hold, crashes only cost you a moment, and big speed boosts wait on the road.

This game sits firmly at the arcade end. You can learn it in one race, but holding the perfect slide through a whole corner and saving your turbo for the right straight takes much longer. If you would rather try the careful side of racing, line up for Truck Racing Championship 3D, where brake temperature decides the race.

How the clock works

You start each race with about thirty seconds on the big yellow clock. Five CHECKPOINT gates stand across the road on every lap, and each one you pass adds a few seconds. Crossing the start line to begin a new lap adds a bigger chunk. Clean driving always earns more time than the clock takes away, but every trip through the sand or into the wall eats into your cushion.

When the clock drops to eight seconds it turns red and starts to flash. That is your signal to stop being clever and just get to the next gate. Any seconds still on the clock when you finish are added to your score, so a clean race beats a lucky one.

Powerslides and turbo

Hold Space, or the SLIDE button on a touch screen, while steering into a corner and the back of the car steps out. The car turns much more tightly while it slides, though it does scrub off a little speed. Every moment you hold a slide fills the TURBO bar at the top of the screen, and a slide of more than half a second also gives you a short boost as you let go and straighten up.

Press Shift or E, or the TURBO button, to burn the bar. You pull much harder, your top speed jumps and flames come out of the back of the car. Save it for a long straight or for getting past a rival. The best drivers slide through every corner and arrive at each straight with a full bar.

Yellow arrow pads on the road give the same boost for free. They usually sit on one side of the road, so you may need to give up the perfect line to catch one.

Six courses

Palm Beach is wide and sunny, with plenty of room to learn sliding. Sunset Canyon is all long sweeping bends between red rocks. Neon City takes you through night streets with sharp corners and glowing towers. Alpine Pass tightens up with green hills and hairpins that punish a late turn. Harbor Lights is very fast along the docks at sundown, and the Turbo Grand Final throws all of it at you, with the toughest rivals and the shortest clock.

Every course is open from the start, so you can jump straight to the one you like. The setup screen shows the most stars you have earned on each one, along with your best lap.

Four cars to unlock

Finishing first earns three stars, a podium place two and any other finish one. You start in the Red Rocket. Four stars unlock the Blue Wave, nine the Lime Bolt and fourteen the Neon Star. Each new car has more speed, better grip and stronger brakes. Only your best result on each course counts, so replaying an easy course will not earn more stars. Stars and high scores are saved in your browser on this device.

Tips for a high score

Look at the minimap in the corner and start your slide before the corner begins, not halfway through it. Let the car point at the exit before you let go. If you slide too long you will lose speed and hit the wall on the far side.

Do not fight the pack on the first lap. Everyone bunches up at the first corners, and a bump costs you speed and time. Pick them off one by one on the straights with your turbo.

If you end up stuck or facing the wrong way, press R to return to the road. It costs a moment, which is usually better than a slow turn around.

Can I play it at school?

Arcade Turbo Racer 3D runs in any modern browser with no download, which is why people often look for it as an unblocked racing game. Whether it opens on a school or work network depends on that network's filter, so we cannot promise it will always be unblocked. If the site opens, the game will work.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when the clock reaches zero?

The race ends and you do not earn any stars for it. Drive through CHECKPOINT gates and finish laps to add time. Each new lap adds the most.

How do I powerslide?

Hold Space or the SLIDE button while you steer into a corner. The car turns tighter and slides sideways. Sliding fills your TURBO bar, and a slide of over half a second gives a short boost when you let go.

How do I use turbo?

Press Shift or E, or the TURBO button on a touch screen, when the TURBO bar has some charge. It burns the bar quickly, so save it for straights and overtakes.

How do I unlock new cars?

Earn stars: 3 for a win, 2 for a podium and 1 for any finish. Only your best result on each course counts. New cars unlock at 4, 9 and 14 stars.

How is my score worked out?

Each star is worth 1,000 points and each second left on the clock is worth 100. The game keeps your high score for each course on this device.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. It runs in 3D on phones, tablets and computers, with on-screen buttons for gas, brake, steering, SLIDE and TURBO. It is free, with no sign-up.
