⭐ Stars: 0 / 24 💵 Cash: $0 🏁 Races: 0

How to play

  • Pick a car and a rival, then press To the line!
  • Watch the lights. Three ambers come on, then a green. The moment it turns green, press Space, ↑ or the big button.
  • Do not go early: leaving before green is a foul and you lose the race.
  • Watch the bar at the top of the screen. When the needle reaches the green zone, press again to shift up.
  • Shift too soon and you lose time. Shift too late and the engine hits the red zone and stops pulling.
  • Press N or E (NITRO) once for a burst of speed. You only get one each race.
  • Spend your winnings in the garage, then come back for a rematch.

A drag racing game where timing is everything

Drag racing is the simplest race there is: two cars, one straight line, and a quarter of a mile to the finish. There are no corners to learn and nothing to steer around, so everything comes down to a handful of perfect moments. Drag Strip Legends turns those moments into the whole game. React to the lights, hit each gear change at exactly the right revs, pick your moment for the nitro and you win. Miss any of them and the other car is already gone.

It plays in 3D in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone, with nothing to download and no sign-up. A race lasts about fifteen seconds, which makes it very easy to keep saying "just one more". All it takes is one button, so even young players can join in.

What is a drag race?

A drag race is a contest of pure acceleration between two vehicles on a straight strip. The classic distance is a quarter of a mile, which is about 402 metres. Between the two lanes stands a set of lights, which racers call the Christmas tree. The lights count down and, when the green comes on, both drivers go. The time from the start line to the finish is called the elapsed time, or ET, and it is the number every drag racer wants to bring down.

Real drag racing also counts your reaction time, because a driver who leaves quickly gets a head start, and that is true here too. If your rival runs a slower ET than you but reacts much faster, they can still beat you to the line.

The launch

Three amber lights come on one at a time, and the wait before the green changes every race, so you cannot simply count along. Press as soon as you see green. Under 0.2 seconds is a perfect launch. Under about 0.4 seconds is fine. Press before the green and you get a foul: the race is over, with no cash at all.

Your tyres also matter. With stock tyres the wheels spin for a moment off the line, you see a cloud of smoke and the car does not pull as hard. Upgraded tyres grip sooner and get you away cleanly.

Shifting gears

The bar across the top of the screen is your tachometer. As you accelerate, the white needle climbs from left to right. Press the button when it is in the green zone for a perfect shift, which gives you a short burst of extra pull. Press a little before the green for a good shift, which is safe but gains nothing. Press far too soon and the car bogs down and loses time. Leave it too long and the needle hits the red zone, where the engine stops pulling completely until you shift.

There are five gears and each one takes longer than the last, so the rhythm changes as you go. Young or new players can tick Automatic gears on the setup screen. The car then shifts by itself at a safe point. It is slower than perfect shifting, but it lets you concentrate on the launch and the nitro.

When to use nitro

Once you have bought the nitro upgrade, a bottle waits in your car for each race. Press N, E or the NITRO button once and it burns until the bottle is empty. It works at any speed, but there is a trade-off. Early on it helps you pull away from a rival. Later on you may already be near the top of a gear, so it can push you into the red zone sooner. Most players find that somewhere after the first hundred metres works best.

Eight rivals up the ladder

You begin against Rookie Ray, who runs the quarter mile in 14.8 seconds, and work up through Weekend Wendy, Shifty Sid, Nitro Nia, Burnout Bo, Quick Quinn and Blackout Blake to The Legend, who runs it in a flat 10 seconds. You can challenge anyone on the ladder at any time. The later rivals are far beyond a stock car, so you will need upgrades and clean driving to beat them.

Upgrades and cars

Every race pays cash, and your first win over each rival pays the most. Spend it in the garage on four upgrades with five levels each. The engine gives more power at all speeds. The gearbox shifts faster and widens the green zone. Tyres cut wheelspin off the line. Nitro gives you a bottle, then a longer, stronger burst at each level.

Stars unlock cars. A win earns one star, a win with a launch under 0.3 seconds earns two, and a win with that launch and no bad shifts earns all three. The Blue Tuner unlocks at 6 stars and the Gold Dragster at 14. Your cash, upgrades and stars are saved in your browser on this device.

Tips for a faster time

Watch the lights, not the car. Your eyes should be on the amber and green at the top of the screen until you launch, and then straight on the needle.

Do not chase the very last moment of the green zone. Press as soon as the needle enters it. If you wait, you risk running into the red.

If you keep losing to a rival by a tenth of a second, a single level of engine or gearbox is often enough. If you are losing by a whole second, go back and beat an easier rival for more cash.

Can I play at school?

Drag Strip Legends runs in any modern browser with no download, which is why people look for it as an unblocked racing game. Whether it opens on a school or work network depends on that network's filter, so we cannot promise it will always be unblocked.

Frequently asked questions

What is a foul start?

Pressing the button before the green light comes on. The race ends right away and you earn no cash, so wait for the green. The wait is different every time.

When should I shift gears?

When the white needle reaches the green zone of the bar at the top of the screen. A shift there is perfect and gives a short boost. Too early loses time, and in the red zone the engine stops pulling.

Is there an automatic mode for younger players?

Yes. Tick Automatic gears on the setup screen. The car shifts by itself at a safe point, so you only need to launch and use nitro. It is a little slower than perfect manual shifting.

How do I get nitro?

Buy the Nitro upgrade in the garage. Each race then gives you one bottle, and higher levels make it last longer and push harder.

How many stars can I get?

Up to three per rival: one for a win, two for a win with a launch under 0.3 seconds, and three for that launch with no bad shifts. There are 24 stars in total.

Is this game unblocked?

It runs in your browser with no download, but whether it opens at school or work depends on that network's filter, so we cannot promise it. If anonarcade.com opens, the game will work.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. It only needs one big button plus a nitro button, so it plays very well on phones and tablets. It is free, with no sign-up.
