How to play

  • Pick a buggy and a dirt track, then press Send it!
  • When the lights go green, hold W or ↑ (GAS) and steer with A and D or ← and →.
  • Drive over the ramps at full speed. Time in the air fills your NITRO bar.
  • Press Shift or E (NITRO) to burn the bar and pull away.
  • Brake with S or ↓ before tight corners, or hold Space (SLIDE) to swing round them.
  • You cannot steer much while flying, so line up before you hit a ramp.
  • Three laps to the finish. Press R to get back on the track and C to change the camera.

Off road racing, the fun kind

Offroad Buggy Racing 3D is about big suspension, loose dirt and leaving the ground as often as possible. You line up with five rival buggies driven by Rusty, Mudflap, Dusty, Skid and Boulder, the lights go out, and everybody heads for the first ramp at full speed. Three laps later, whoever flew best and landed straightest takes the win.

It plays in full 3D in your web browser, on a computer, tablet or phone, with nothing to download and no account. A race lasts around two minutes, so it is easy to play another.

Why jumping is the fastest way around

In most racing games a jump is a moment of danger. Here it is your fuel. Every moment your buggy spends in the air fills the NITRO bar at the top of the screen, and bigger jumps fill it faster. Land after more than a second in the air and you will see HUGE AIR flash up. Press Shift or E, or the NITRO button on a touch screen, and you pull away with a burst of speed and yellow flames.

Speed makes the jump, and the jump makes more speed, so a good lap builds on itself. Hit a ramp slowly and you get only a small hop with hardly any nitro. Hit it flat out and you sail across, land with a full bar and blast past the buggy in front. The finish screen shows your biggest air of the race, which makes for a good second contest with friends.

Line up before you take off

Buggies can hardly steer in the air. You can turn a little, but you cannot brake or accelerate until your wheels are back on the dirt, so the direction you are pointing when you leave the ramp is mostly the direction you land. Try to straighten up before each ramp and aim for the middle of the road beyond it. Landing sideways near the edge usually means a slow trip through the rough.

Driving on dirt

Dirt is looser than tarmac. The back of the buggy moves around, and the buggy keeps sliding the way it was going for a moment after you turn. Start your turn a little earlier than you would on a road. For sharp corners, hold Space, or SLIDE on a touch screen, and the buggy swings round quickly at the cost of some speed. Sliding also adds a little to your nitro bar.

If you run wide, you hit the rough beside the track and your top speed drops by almost half. A wall of advertising boards stops you from going too far. If you get stuck or turned around, press R and you will be put straight back on the track.

What is a dune buggy?

A dune buggy is a small, light off-road car, usually with no doors and no roof apart from a strong frame of steel tubes called a roll cage. Long suspension and big soft tyres let it ride over sand, dirt and rocks at speed. People first built them from old cars in the 1960s to play on the beaches and sand dunes of California. Our buggies have the same exposed frame, big tyres and helmeted driver, so you can see the whole machine bounce when it lands. No driver gets hurt in this game.

Six dirt tracks

Dusty Valley is the easy start, with three friendly jumps. Red Rock Run winds through a canyon with four. Pine Ridge gives you big air among the trees, and Quarry Pit is tight with rocky walls. Sunset Mesa has the biggest ramps yet, and Night Mud Bash is the finale, with six jumps under the floodlights and the fastest rivals. All six are open from the start.

Four buggies to unlock

A win earns three stars, a podium place two, and any other finish one. Only your best result on each track counts, for up to 18 stars. You start in the Dirt Scout. Four stars unlock the Dune Ranger, nine the Sky Hopper and fourteen the Mud Beast. Each one accelerates harder, goes faster and grips better than the last. Your progress is saved in your browser on this device.

Tips for winning

Save your nitro for the straight right after a corner. That is where you gain the most, because your speed is lowest there.

Use nitro just before a ramp if you want an enormous jump. It gives you more air, and so more nitro to use on the far side.

If a rival is right next to you going into a ramp, stay straight and let them bump you rather than steering across. A clean takeoff matters more than the space.

Can I play at school?

Offroad Buggy Racing 3D runs in any modern browser with no download, which is why people look for it as an unblocked racing game. Whether it opens on a school or work network depends on that network's filter, so we cannot promise it will always be unblocked.
