How to play

  • Pick a steam engine and a trip, then click Raise Steam.
  • Press ↑ or W to open the regulator and ↓ or S to close it and brake. On a phone, slide the lever on the right.
  • Press F (🔥) to shovel coal. The fire keeps the boiler pressure up: keep the psi gauge in its green band. Too much coal and the safety valve blows.
  • Press J (💧) to work the injector, which moves water from the tender into the boiler. Never let the boiler water run low.
  • Stop at the yellow STOP ENGINE board at each station. At Fernhill the water tower refills your tender.
  • H blows the whistle, C switches camera (chase, cab, trackside, heli), and Space is the emergency brake.

A steam train game where you are the driver and the fireman

Steam Train Express puts you on the footplate of a real-feeling steam locomotive on the Valley Heritage Railway. There is nothing to download. The game loads in a browser tab and you start at Oakbridge station with steam already raised, a wisp of smoke from the chimney and a train of vintage coaches behind the tender. Open the regulator and the engine gives its first slow chuff, then another, and the big driving wheels start to turn.

Unlike most train games, the power here does not come for free. A steam engine only moves if there is pressure in its boiler, and that pressure comes from the fire. Press F to shovel coal into the firebox and watch the pressure gauge climb into its green band. Work the engine hard up a hill and the pressure drops, so you have to keep firing. Too much coal and the safety valve lifts with a roar of wasted steam.

Coal, water and the injector

The boiler also needs water. Every chuff uses some of it, and if the water in the gauge glass gets too low, the engine is in danger. Press J to work the injector, which pushes water from the tender into the boiler. It cools the boiler a little, so the pressure dips as you do it. The tender holds only so much water. Halfway along the line, stop at Fernhill, where the water tower refills the tender while passengers board.

The Valley Heritage Railway

The line runs through five stations: Oakbridge, the country junction of Millbrook with sheep in the fields, Fernhill with its water tower, the hill town of Castle Rock after the tunnel, and finally Seaview, down by the sea. On the way you cross a stone viaduct over the river and pass through a brick-lined tunnel under the hill. Each station has a platform, a canopy, a station building with a clock and passengers waiting to board your coaches.

Choose from five trips. Learn to Fire is a short first run from Oakbridge to Millbrook that teaches coal and water. The Valley Express stops at every station to Seaview. The Mountain Mail is a fast run with only two stops, and one of them is the water stop at Fernhill, which you must not miss. The Sunset Special runs as the sun goes down, and Free Steam has no timetable at all.

Three steam engines to unlock

You start with Little Red, a small red and black tank engine with three coaches and a top speed of 45 mph. At 8 stars you unlock the Black Prince, a green-lined express engine that pulls four coaches at up to 60 mph. At 18 stars you get the Golden Arrow, a blue and gold express locomotive with five coaches and a top speed of 75 mph. Watch the side rods pump the driving wheels from the trackside camera, or ride in the cab and watch the firebox glow each time you shovel.

Why kids love steam trains

Steam engines have fascinated children for generations: the smoke, the whistle, the chuffing and the huge spoked wheels. Steam Train Express lets them find out how it all really works. Players learn that fire makes steam, steam makes power and water keeps the boiler safe, and they practise managing several things at once while still watching the signals, the speed limits and the next station.

Steam Train Express is free, needs no account, and keeps your stars and totals only in your own browser. It works with a keyboard or with the on-screen lever and buttons on phones and tablets. See the Parents & Safety page for privacy details. For modern trains, try Rail Driver 3D, or browse the Train Games hub for more.

Frequently asked questions

Is Steam Train Express free?

Yes. It is a free steam train game that runs in a web browser with no download, account, or plugin.

Why is my steam train slowing down?

The boiler pressure is probably too low. Press F to shovel coal and keep the pressure gauge in its green band. A hard climb uses lots of steam, so keep firing.

What does the injector do?

The injector (J or the 💧 button) moves water from the tender into the boiler. Keep the boiler water above the dashed line. Each use cools the boiler slightly, so the pressure dips a little.

Where do I get more water?

At Fernhill station there is a water tower. Stop at the platform and it refills your tender while passengers board.

How do I unlock the other engines?

Earn stars by finishing trips. The Black Prince unlocks at 8 stars and the Golden Arrow at 18 stars.

Does it work on phones and Chromebooks?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser with 3D graphics (WebGL). On touchscreens a lever controls the regulator and brakes, and buttons shovel coal and work the injector.
