A railroad tycoon game you can play in your browser

Railroad Tycoon puts you in a top hat at the start of the railway age. It is 1880, you have some money in the bank, and in front of you is a map of little towns, coal mines, farms and power plants, cut through by a winding river and dotted with hills and forests. There are no railways yet. Your job is to build them, run them and turn them into an empire before the scenario's final year.

Building is simple. Choose Build Track, click one place and then another, and a dotted line shows what the new line will cost. Lines over hills cost more, and crossing the river needs a bridge. Once the track is laid, choose Buy Train and click the line, and a little steam engine starts running back and forth with its wagons, earning money at every stop.

Passengers, mail, coal and grain

Different lines carry different cargo. Between two towns, trains carry passengers, and bigger towns have more people waiting. A line from a town to an industry carries mail. The real money is in freight: coal from a mine pays well when it reaches a power plant, and grain from a farm sells in any town. Every place builds up a stock of passengers or cargo over time, so busy lines may need a second or third train.

Fares depend on distance, so long lines earn more per trip, but they also cost more to build and take longer to run. Every year you pay upkeep for your trains and track, so a line that doesn't earn its keep is a drain on your money. Balancing those costs is the heart of any good tycoon game.

Steam, diesel and electric

You start with the Steam 4-4-0, a cheap little engine that carries 40 passengers. After you have earned $60,000 the Diesel Hauler becomes available: faster, and big enough for 70. At $200,000 you can buy the Electric Express, the fastest train on the map with room for 110. Upgrading the right lines at the right time is how a small railroad becomes a giant.

Three scenarios and Free Play

Valley Starter is a gentle introduction with six towns and a goal of $150,000 net worth by 1895. Coal Country is full of mines and power plants, perfect for freight. Coast to Coast is a big map with eleven towns and a long time limit, where you can build a network that spans the whole continent. Each scenario gives up to three stars for your final net worth, and Free Play lets you build with no time limit at all.

Why kids love tycoon games

Tycoon games teach real ideas about money and planning in a way that feels like play. Children compare costs and earnings, save up for a big purchase, notice which lines are profitable and learn why upkeep matters. The railway theme makes it easy to picture what is happening on the map, and the growing network is its own reward.

Railroad Tycoon is free, needs no account, and keeps your stars and best scores only in your own browser. It works with a mouse or a touchscreen. See the Parents & Safety page for privacy details. Prefer running a single station? Try Train Station Builder, or browse the Train Games hub.
