🚆 Rail Driver 3D

Drive the Riverbend Line: stations, signals and speed limits.

🚆 Runs: 0 ⭐ Stars: 0 🛤️ Miles driven: 0.0

How to play

  • Pick a train and a run, then click Start the Train.
  • Press ↑ or W to move the handle towards Power, and ↓ or S to go back to Coast and then Brake. On a phone, slide the lever on the right.
  • Keep under the speed limit shown on the white sign next to your speed. The line warns you when a lower limit is coming up.
  • Trains are heavy. Start braking early and stop with the front of the train at the yellow STOP board. The stop bar helps you hit the green zone.
  • Red signal? Slow down and stop before it. It turns green when the line ahead is clear. Yellow means the next signal may be red.
  • Space is the emergency brake, H sounds the horn, R reverses when you're stopped, and C switches camera (chase, cab, trackside, heli).

A train simulator you can play in your browser

Rail Driver 3D puts you in the driver's seat of a real-feeling passenger train, with nothing to download or install. The game loads in a browser tab and starts you at the platform in Harbor Town, next to the harbor. Push the handle forward and the train pulls out of the station. From there you drive the Riverbend Line through farmland and forest, over a steel bridge across the river, through a tunnel under Pine Hill and up the long climb to the terminus at Summit City.

This is a proper train driving game rather than an arcade racer. Your train has weight, so it builds up speed slowly and needs a long distance to stop, just like a real one. Hills matter too. Climbing to Summit City takes more power, and on the way down you have to hold the brake. The controls stay simple for younger drivers: a single power and brake lever, like the ones in modern commuter trains. Push it up for power, pull it back to coast and brake.

Stations, timetables and the perfect stop

The heart of any railway game is the station stop, and Rail Driver 3D makes it a skill to master. Each platform has a yellow STOP board, and a stop bar appears at the bottom of the screen as you arrive. Stop with the front of the train right on the marker for a Perfect Stop. The doors open with a chime, waiting passengers walk to the doors and board, then the doors close and the platform signal turns green for departure.

In the Morning Local you work to a timetable. Every station has a due time on the clock at the top of the screen, and you score points for arriving on time and stopping accurately. The First Run is a guided lesson from Harbor Town to Maple Grove that shows you how to accelerate, watch the speed limit and brake smoothly into the platform.

Signals and speed limits

Like a real railway, the Riverbend Line has automatic signals. Green means the line is clear, yellow means the next signal may be red, and red means stop. In the Express Run and the Night Run, a signal ahead may be held at red because another train is on the line. You have to slow down and wait until it clears. Pass a red signal and the train protection system slams on the emergency brake. Speed limit boards stand beside the track before curves, the bridge and the tunnel, and your speedometer flashes if you go too fast.

The line is double track, so other trains pass you going the other way: intercity expresses, yellow commuter trains and long freight trains with boxcars, hoppers, tank cars and containers. Switch to the trackside camera to watch your own train race past, the heli camera for a bird's-eye view, or the cab view to see the rails ahead through the windscreen.

Three trains to unlock

Every finished run earns up to three stars. You start with the Commuter EMU, a four-car electric train with a top speed of 80 mph. At 8 stars you unlock the Intercity Express, a red locomotive with five coaches that reaches 110 mph. At 20 stars you unlock the Bullet Train, a sleek high-speed train with a long nose that can hit 150 mph where the line allows it. Faster trains take longer to stop, so the stations get harder.

Why kids (and grown-ups) love train driving games

Train games have been popular for decades, from model railways to big PC railroad simulators. Rail Driver 3D brings that feeling to any laptop, Chromebook or tablet for free. Along the way players practise planning ahead, judging distance and speed, reading signals and timetables, and staying calm under a little time pressure. There are no crashes or scary moments. The worst that happens is a missed stop and some unhappy passengers.

Rail Driver 3D is free, needs no account, and keeps your stars and best scores only in your own browser. It works with a keyboard or with the on-screen lever and buttons on phones and tablets. See the Parents & Safety page for privacy details. For more railway fun, browse the Train Games hub, or take to the skies in Sky Pilot 3D.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rail Driver 3D free?

Yes. It is a free train simulator game that runs in a web browser with no download, account, or plugin.

How do I drive the train?

Press the up arrow or W to add power and the down arrow or S to coast and then brake. The train has one combined power and brake handle, shown at the top left of the screen. On a phone or tablet, slide the lever on the right up for power and down to brake.

How do I get a perfect stop?

Start braking early, because trains need a long distance to stop. As you reach the platform a stop bar appears. Stop with the yellow dot inside the green zone, right at the yellow STOP board.

What do the signal colours mean?

Green means the line ahead is clear. Yellow means be ready to stop, because the next signal may be red. Red means stop before the signal and wait until it turns green. Passing a red signal applies the emergency brake.

How do I unlock the bullet train?

Earn stars by finishing runs. The Intercity Express unlocks at 8 stars and the Bullet Train at 20 stars. Each run gives up to 3 stars depending on your score.

Does it work on phones and Chromebooks?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser with 3D graphics (WebGL). On touchscreens a lever on the right controls power and brakes, with buttons for the horn, emergency brake, reverse and camera.
