Real, complete chess rules
Chess Arena implements the full rulebook, not a simplified version: legal move generation that actually prevents moving into check, castling on both sides with every legality condition checked (king and rook untouched, empty squares between them, king not moving through or into check), en passant captures, automatic queen promotion, and full checkmate and stalemate detection to end the game correctly.
The AI opponent runs a genuine alpha-beta pruned minimax search rather than picking random legal moves, weighing material and piece positioning (favoring central knights and advanced pawns, the same fundamentals every beginner is taught) at every difficulty level, searching deeper as you raise the difficulty from Easy up through Hard. Switch to 2 Player mode for local, same-device play with a friend, no account or second device needed.
Part of the Classic Board Games collection alongside Kings Row (checkers) and Four in a Row, sharing the same difficulty system and sound design. Free, no download, no account, and your win record saves locally in your own browser.
Frequently asked questions
Does Chess Arena support castling and en passant?
Yes, both are fully implemented with real legality checks: castling requires the king and rook to be untouched, the squares between them empty, and the king not currently in, passing through, or landing on check. En passant is available for exactly one move immediately after an opponent's pawn double-steps past your pawn.
What happens when a pawn reaches the last row?
It's automatically promoted to a queen, the choice strong players pick in the vast majority of real games.
How strong is the Hard AI?
Hard searches 3 moves ahead with alpha-beta pruned minimax, weighing material and piece positioning, strong enough to punish free pieces and short tactics. Medium searches 2 moves ahead, and Easy searches 1, avoiding obvious blunders but missing deeper tactics.
Is Chess Arena free with no account needed?
Yes. It's completely free with no download and no account, and your win record saves only in your own browser.
