โ Triple Threat
Classic tic-tac-toe vs a real computer, or Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe for two.
How to play
- Classic: get 3 in a row, column, or diagonal on the 3x3 board.
- Play vs Computer (3 difficulties) or pass-and-play with a friend.
- Ultimate: 9 mini-boards. The square you play sends your opponent to that numbered mini-board next.
- Win 3 mini-boards in a row to win the whole Ultimate game.
- A locked (won or drawn) mini-board can't be played in, if sent there, play anywhere instead.
Tic-tac-toe with a real computer opponent, and a deeper second mode
Triple Threat is free online tic-tac-toe, but built with two things most quick clones skip. First, a genuine computer opponent: Hard difficulty runs a real minimax search that evaluates every possible way the rest of the game could play out and always picks the objectively best move, so it can never actually lose, only be forced to a draw by another perfect player. Easy plays randomly for younger kids just learning the game, and Medium plays like a decent but beatable opponent, taking obvious wins and blocks but missing deeper traps. There's also a local 2-player pass-and-play mode if you'd rather play a friend on the same screen.
Second, Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe: 9 mini tic-tac-toe boards arranged in one big 3x3 grid. Whichever square you play inside a mini-board decides which mini-board your opponent has to play in next, so a move in the corner isn't just about that one small board, it's about where you're sending your opponent. Win 3 mini-boards in a row, column, or diagonal to win the whole game. It's the real strategic variant that most tic-tac-toe games online don't bother building, genuinely more interesting once you've outgrown the classic version. A mini-board that ends in a draw locks permanently and doesn't count for either player; if you'd be sent to a locked board, you get a free choice of any open one instead.
Free, no download, no account. See more logic and strategy games on the Puzzle Games page, or try Kings Row for real checkers against the same kind of computer opponent.
Frequently asked questions
Is the computer opponent actually good?
On Hard, yes: it uses a real minimax search that always finds the best possible move, so it can never be beaten, only drawn with perfect play. Easy plays randomly and Medium plays reasonably but not perfectly, so there's a difficulty for every skill level.
What is Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe?
A deeper variant played across 9 mini tic-tac-toe boards arranged in a 3x3 grid. Whichever square you play in a mini-board sends your opponent to the matching mini-board next, so you're always thinking two moves ahead. Win 3 mini-boards in a row to win the whole game.
Can I play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe against the computer?
Not yet, Ultimate mode is local 2-player only for now. Classic mode has the full computer opponent.
What happens if a mini-board in Ultimate mode ends in a draw?
It locks as a draw and doesn't count toward either player, but it also can't be played in again, and sending an opponent to a locked mini-board lets them play anywhere instead.
