Free rebus puzzles to play online

Rebus Puzzles is a free word and picture game with nearly 140 puzzles, from sums of little pictures for young kids to sayings that will make grown-ups stop and stare. Each puzzle hides a word or phrase, and the way it is drawn is the clue. It plays in your web browser with no download, on computers, tablets and phones. Every puzzle and answer is also listed further down this page, so you can use them in class or at the dinner table.

What is a rebus puzzle?

A rebus is a puzzle that uses pictures, letters, numbers and their position to stand for words. The word comes from Latin and means, roughly, "by things", because things stand in for the words. A picture of a bee and a leaf says "belief". The word STAND written above the letter I says "I understand", because I is under STAND. People have enjoyed rebus puzzles for hundreds of years, in coats of arms, letters, children's books and newspapers, and they are still popular on classroom whiteboards and on TV game shows.

How to solve a rebus puzzle

Start by saying exactly what you see, out loud. If you see MAN above a line and BOARD below it, say "man over board" and the answer pops out. Then check these clues one by one. Position: is one word over, under, in, between, before or after another? Size: a huge word might mean big, and a tiny one small. Direction: a word running down the page might mean down, and a word written backward might mean back. Colour: a red word might start with red. Sounds: 4 can mean for, 2 can mean to or too, the letter U can mean you and C can mean see. Marks: a crossed-out word might mean cross. Most puzzles use just one or two of these tricks, and once you know them you will start spotting them everywhere.

Four sets, easy to really hard

Picture Words adds emoji together to build a word, like a star and a fish for starfish. It is a great place to start for kids from about six. Word Tricks teaches the main tricks, one at a time: words that are big, small, coloured, crossed out or running uphill. Tricky Phrases hides whole sayings such as "once upon a time" and "reading between the lines". Really Hard saves the sneakiest puzzles for last, such as the alphabet with one letter missing. Stars from the earlier sets open the later ones.

Pick or type: two ways to play

In Pick the answer mode you choose from four answers, which is best for younger players and for learning the tricks. In Type it mode there are no choices, so you really have to crack the puzzle yourself. Spelling does not have to be perfect, and small words such as "a" and "the" at the start do not matter. Hints cost half the points, and streaks of right answers add bonus points. Each round deals puzzles you have not seen yet first, so you keep meeting new ones.

Rebus puzzles for kids and for class

Rebus puzzles are good practice for reading, spelling, sound patterns and flexible thinking, because they make children look at words in a new way. They work well as a warm-up at the start of a lesson, a quick group challenge or a rainy-day activity at home. Use the print buttons above the lists below to make a worksheet, with or without the answers. Everything on the page is free to use with your own class or family.
