How to play

  • Pick a map, a mission and a tank destroyer, then press Start.
  • Stay still inside a bush cluster: the camouflage meter fills and the robots can't see you from far away.
  • Point the mouse at a robot tank to aim (or use Q and E). Click or press Space to fire.
  • Hit robots in the side or the back for double damage. The front armour is tough.
  • Firing gives you away. If the robots start shooting back, drive to the next bush.
  • Hold Shift or the right mouse button (or tap V) for the zoomed gunner's sight.
  • Stop the column before 3 robots reach the red gate at the end of the valley.

Ambush the robot tank column

Tank Destroyer 3D is a game about patience. Down in the valley, columns of robot tanks are rolling along the road towards a red gate at the far end. Up on the ridge, you are waiting in the bushes in a tank destroyer, a low vehicle with a very big gun and not much armour. If you charge down the hill, the robots will spot you and fire back. If you sit still in cover, let them drive past and hit them from the side, you can stop a whole column before they know where the shots are coming from.

There are no people in this game. The enemies are robot tanks with glowing yellow eyes and antennas, and when one is stopped it just stops, puffs black smoke and stays put. Everything runs in 3D in the web browser, with no download and no sign-up.

What is a tank destroyer?

A tank destroyer is a vehicle built to do one job: knock out tanks. Tank destroyers usually carry a bigger gun than tanks of the same size, but to save weight they have thinner armour, and many of them, like the one in this game, have an open top instead of a closed turret. That makes them dangerous in a stand-up fight. Instead, their crews would hide, wait for tanks to come past, fire from the side and move on before anyone could fire back. That is exactly how you win here: shoot and scoot.

Camouflage and getting spotted

The camouflage meter in the top corner shows how well hidden you are. Park inside one of the bush clusters on the ridges and keep still, and the meter fills up: the robots then have to come very close before they see you. Sitting still out in the open is only half as good, and driving around makes you easy to see. Every shot you fire is loud and bright, so it gives your position away for a few seconds whatever the meter says.

When a robot spots you, the eye in the corner turns red and says Seen. The robot slows down, turns its turret towards you and starts firing, and it gets more accurate the longer it watches you. That is the moment to relocate: back out of the bushes, drive along the ridge to the next green bush cluster on the minimap, stop and let the camouflage build up again.

Hit them from the side

Robot tanks have their thickest armour at the front. A shell that hits a robot's side or back does double damage, which is why you should let a column drive past your position before you open fire. A Scout Bot is stopped by any hit, a Robo Tank needs two front hits or one side hit, a Heavy Bot three front hits, and the Mega Bot at the end of each map needs six. The bigger robots are slower, though, so you have time to line up a side shot.

Twelve missions on three maps

Pine Valley is the first map: a green valley full of pines with gentle ridges. Farm Hills opens at 7 stars and has the valley at sunset, and Snow Pass opens at 16 stars, a white mountain valley where the robots are at their sharpest. Each map has four missions with bigger and tougher columns, and every fourth mission ends with a Mega Bot. The robots see further and shoot straighter in every mission, so the camouflage meter matters more and more.

A mission is won when every robot in it has been stopped or has driven through, as long as fewer than three get through the red gate. It is lost if three robots get past or if your tank destroyer runs out of armour. Finish a mission for one star, with half your armour left for two, and with three quarters for three.

Three tank destroyers

You start in the Hornet, the fastest tank destroyer, which is good for relocating quickly. The Badger opens at 10 stars: a bit slower, with thicker armour and a quicker reload. The Rhino opens at 22 stars: the slowest, with the thickest armour and a gun so big that each hit counts one and a half times.

Aiming

Point the mouse at a robot and the turret swings round to it, and the fire control sets the gun's elevation for the range. Robots on the road keep moving, so for a long shot aim a little ahead of them. Hold Shift or the right mouse button, or tap V, to look through the zoomed gunner's sight; move the mouse away from the middle to swing the gun. On phones and tablets the gun locks on to the nearest robot in front of you by itself, so you only need to drive, use the 🔭 sight button and fire.
