  • Hold still for a moment and the bus is parked.
  • On reversing levels, drive past the bay, stop, then keep holding the brake (S or ↓) to reverse in.

A bus parking game for careful drivers

Bus Parking 3D is a precision parking game with a real sense of size. Your bus is twelve metres long and two and a half metres wide, it needs plenty of room to swing round a corner, and its back end cuts inside the line of the front wheels. Parking it neatly between two other buses is a genuine puzzle, and that is what makes it so satisfying when it slides perfectly into the bay.

Everything happens at a gentle walking pace. There is no traffic and no timer pressure beyond a par time for stars, so you can take every manoeuvre slowly, stop, look around with the different cameras and try again.

Twelve levels, from easy to expert

The first levels teach the basics: drive straight into a bay at the bus depot, then turn into a gap between parked buses. Back Into the Depot asks you to reverse into a bay, the way real drivers park at the end of a shift. Kerbside Stop moves you onto a street, where you pull in to the kerb between two parked buses. Sawtooth Station has slanted bays under the canopy of the central bus station, and the Bus Wash is a narrow tunnel of spinning brushes with only a hand's width to spare on each side.

After that come the Cone Course, a driving-test slalom through cone gates before you park, the Pillar Garage, where you reverse between concrete pillars in an underground depot, and the Night Depot, where only your headlights show the way to the last free bay.

The bendy bus

The last three levels hand you an eighteen-metre articulated bus, the long "bendy bus" with a concertina joint in the middle. The back half is pulled along behind the front and follows its own line round every corner, cutting inside the bend. A small dial in the corner shows the angle of the joint. Take corners wide, keep the joint as straight as you can when you line up, and remember that the whole bus, both halves, has to finish inside the long bay.

How parking is judged

A level is complete when the whole bus is inside the green bay, lined up with its lines, and stopped. The bay glows yellow when you are in the right place, and a bar fills up while you hold still. On forward levels the bus can face either way unless the level says otherwise; on reversing levels it has to finish facing out of the bay. The kerbside stop must be done facing the direction of travel.

Each level has a par time. Park with no touches and under par for three stars; with one touch and a little over par for two stars; and any successful park earns at least one. Touching a parked bus, a cone, a wall or a pillar three times ends the level, but you can try again straight away. Stars unlock new paint jobs for your bus: Royal Red, Eco Green and Gold Express.

Tips for perfect parking

Go slowly: a bus at walking pace is easy to correct, and the sensors give you time to stop. Before turning into a bay, swing out to the far side of the aisle to give yourself room. When reversing, remember that the back of the bus moves the opposite way to the steering wheel, and make small corrections. Switch to the top-down camera to line the bus up with the bay lines, or the mirror camera to watch the side of the bus against a wall or a parked bus. With the bendy bus, drive past the bay a little before turning in so the back half has room to follow.

Real bus driving skills

Real bus drivers practise exactly these manoeuvres before they are allowed to carry passengers. Driving tests include reversing into a bay, stopping close to the kerb at a bus stop and steering through a cone course, because a bus that swings its back end into a pillar or a parked car is an expensive mistake. Two things make a bus so different from a car. The first is its length: the rear wheels follow a tighter line than the front wheels, so the side of the bus sweeps inwards on every turn. The second is the overhang: the front of the bus sticks out a long way in front of the front wheels, so it swings outwards as you turn.

That is why good bus drivers make wide, slow turns and always check their mirrors. In Bus Parking 3D you can watch both effects from the top-down camera, and you will soon start to feel where the corners of the bus are.

Controls

On a computer: W or the up arrow drives forward, S or the down arrow brakes, and keeping it held once stopped reverses. A and D or the left and right arrows steer. C cycles the cameras, L switches the lights, H sounds the horn, R restarts the level and P pauses. On phones and tablets the steering arrows are on the left and the brake and gas pedals are on the right; hold BRAKE when stopped to reverse.

Frequently asked questions

How do I park the bus?

Drive slowly into the green bay so the whole bus is inside and lined up with the lines. The bay turns yellow; stop and hold still for a moment and the bus is parked.

How do I reverse?

Stop the bus, then keep holding the brake (S or the down arrow, or BRAKE on a touch screen). The bus reverses while you hold it.

What is the bendy bus?

An 18-metre articulated bus with a joint in the middle. Its back half follows the front around corners, so you need to take turns wide. It appears in the last three levels.

How do I get 3 stars?

Park without touching anything and within the par time shown at the top of the screen.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Touch controls appear automatically: steering arrows on the left, brake and gas on the right.

Is Bus Parking 3D free?
