How to play

  • Hold → or D (or the GAS pedal) to drive. Hold ← or A (or BRAKE) to slow down and reverse.
  • Passengers ride on the open top deck. Big bumps and steep tilts throw them off!
  • In the air, gas tips the bus forwards and brake tips it backwards. Land on the wheels.
  • At each 🚏 bus stop, stop in the yellow zone: everyone gets off and pays, and new passengers climb aboard.
  • Grab ⛽ fuel cans before the tank runs out, and 🪙 coins along the way.
  • Spend coins in the garage on the engine, tyres, suspension, fuel tank and railings.

A hill climb game with a bus full of passengers

Hill Climb Bus is a wobbly, bouncy physics driving game. You drive an open-top bus over endless hills, and your passengers are riding on the top deck, holding on as best they can. Every bump, every jump and every steep slope throws them around, because they are real physics objects, just like the bus. Drive too fast and they bounce right off. Tip the bus too far and they slide off the back. Flip the bus onto its roof and the trip is over.

The aim is to get as far as you can, delivering as many passengers as possible on the way. It is the kind of game where you say "just one more go" every time.

How to drive

Hold the gas to drive forwards and the brake to slow down or reverse. On a steep climb, keep the gas steady so the wheels do not spin; on a steep drop, brake early so the bus does not run away. When the bus leaves the ground, the pedals tip it in the air: gas tips the nose down and brake lifts it up. Land on both wheels and you keep going. Land on the roof and it is game over.

The bus has springy suspension, so it bounces over bumps, and the passengers on top feel every one of them. A smooth driver loses nobody.

Bus stops, coins and fuel

Every so often a bus stop appears, with a yellow zone in front of it. Stop the bus inside the zone and hold still for a moment: everyone on board gets off and pays their fare, and a fresh load of passengers climbs on. The further you have driven, the more each passenger pays. Drive straight past a stop and you miss it, and your passengers have to wait for the next one.

The bus also needs fuel. The tank drains while you drive, and red fuel cans along the road fill it up again; each stop adds a little too. Run out of fuel and the bus rolls to a stop. Collect the coins along the road as well.

Upgrades

Coins buy upgrades in the garage, five levels each. The Engine gives more power for steep hills. Tyres grip better, which matters most on snow. Suspension makes the bus softer over bumps, so the passengers bounce less. A bigger Fuel tank lets you drive further between cans, and taller Railings help passengers hold on, and make room for more of them.

Five worlds

Green Hills is the place to learn, with rolling farmland. Desert Dunes has huge sandy hills. The Snowy Pass is slippery, so the wheels spin unless you are gentle. Moon Base has very low gravity, so every bump sends the bus floating through space, with the Earth hanging in the black sky. And Candy Land is the bumpiest of all. Each world has three distance goals that earn stars, and stars open the next world.

Tips for going further

Do not hold the gas all the time. Ease off at the top of every hill so the bus does not launch into the air, and brake before steep drops. If the bus starts to tip backwards on a climb, ease off the gas for a moment. Stop at every bus stop: passengers are worth much more delivered than left on the deck. Upgrade the suspension and railings early if you keep losing passengers, and the engine and tyres when the hills get steep.

Real physics, real wobble

Everything in Hill Climb Bus is simulated by a physics engine. The bus has weight, its wheels sit on springs, and every passenger is a separate round body that can roll, bounce and slide. Nothing is scripted, so no two trips are ever the same: one bump might settle the passengers neatly in a row, the next might send one flying off the back. That is what makes a long run so tense, and a full bus pulling into a stop so satisfying.

The worlds show the physics off in different ways. On the moon the low gravity lets the bus hang in the air for ages, so you have plenty of time to level it but passengers drift off easily. On snow the tyres lose grip, so too much gas just spins the wheels, and gentle throttle is the only way up a slope.

Who is it for?

Hill Climb Bus has only two pedals, so it is easy for younger players to pick up, while the distance goals in the later worlds give older players plenty to chase. Every run teaches something new about balance, speed and gravity, and each coin you bank makes the next trip a little longer.

Controls

On a computer: the right arrow or D for gas, the left arrow or A for brake and reverse (the up and down arrows work too), P to pause and R to restart. On phones and tablets, hold the big GAS pedal on the right and the BRAKE pedal on the left.

Free, safe and made for every device

Hill Climb Bus is cartoon physics fun: passengers who fall off just tumble away with a surprised face and nobody is hurt. There are no adverts inside the game, no accounts, no chat and nothing to buy with real money, and your coins, upgrades and stars are saved only on your device. See the Parents & Safety page for more.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop passengers falling off?

Drive smoothly: ease off the gas at the top of hills and brake before steep drops. The suspension and railings upgrades help passengers stay on.

How do I use the bus stops?

Stop the bus in the yellow zone in front of the bus stop and hold still. Everyone gets off and pays, and new passengers climb aboard.

What ends the game?

Flipping the bus onto its roof, or running out of fuel. Fuel cans on the road fill the tank.

How do I tip the bus in the air?

While the bus is in the air, gas tips the nose down and brake tips it up. Try to land on both wheels.

How do I unlock new worlds?

Reach the distance goals in each world for stars. Desert Dunes opens at 2 stars, Snowy Pass at 4, Moon Base at 7 and Candy Land at 10.

Is Hill Climb Bus free?

Yes. It is free with no download, no account and nothing to buy.
