Star Defender: Rescue
Fly freely over a scrolling planet, carry stranded characters to safety, and blast the landers before they carry them off.
How to play
- Fly with the arrow keys, WASD, the on-screen buttons, or by dragging anywhere on the screen. Your ship keeps its momentum, it isn't grid snapped.
- Press Space, tap Fire, or tap the screen to shoot in whichever direction you're facing.
- Fly close to a stranded character on the ground to pick them up, then swing back near the ground anywhere to drop them off safely. You can carry up to two at once.
- A lander that escapes off the top of the screen with a captured character turns into a tougher mutant that hunts you down. Shoot a carrying lander to free its captive instead, then catch them as they fall.
- Watch the radar strip at the top for off-screen threats, and save your limited smart bomb for when things get overwhelming.

A free-roam defender arcade game built around a real rescue mechanic
Star Defender: Rescue is a defender arcade game built in the spirit of the genre's classic free-roam side-scrolling shooters: instead of being locked to one row like a fixed-grid shooter, your ship can fly in any direction, left, right, up or down, with real momentum instead of instant grid-snapped movement, over a planet that wraps around and scrolls smoothly beneath the camera as you travel. A slight forward lookahead keeps the camera biased toward wherever you're actually flying, so you always see a little more of what's coming than what's behind you.
The heart of the game is the genre's original historical hook: stranded characters wait scattered across the terrain, and enemy landers rise up from the ground hunting for one to grab. Fly close to a stranded character to pick them up yourself, then swing back down near the ground anywhere to drop them off safely for points. If a lander reaches the top of the screen with a captured character first, that character is lost for good and the lander itself mutates into a faster, more aggressive enemy that actively hunts you for the rest of the run, instead of just another palette-swapped grunt. Shoot a lander while it's still carrying someone and you free them instead, they fall, and flying underneath to catch them mid-air both saves them and earns a bonus. A radar strip across the top of the screen maps the whole wrapping planet at once so no threat sneaks up from off-screen, and a limited-use smart bomb clears every enemy and bullet on screen when a wave gets out of hand.
Star Defender: Rescue is the baseline entry in AnonArcade's defender-style series. For the exact same rescue mission with asteroid hazards drifting through the terrain, try Star Defender: Nebula Storm. For a version where every wave ends in a distinct boss fight instead of just more landers, try Star Defender: Boss Gauntlet. Looking for a different kind of classic arcade action? AnonArcade's fixed-grid shooter series starts with Galaxy Invasion.
Frequently asked questions
How do I control Star Defender: Rescue?
Fly with the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard, the on-screen up, down, left and right buttons, or by dragging anywhere on the screen with your mouse or finger. Press Space, tap the Fire button, or tap the screen to shoot in the direction your ship is facing.
How does the rescue mechanic work?
Stranded characters wait on the ground below. Fly close to pick one up, then fly back near the ground anywhere to drop them off safely and score points. You can carry up to two at once.
What happens if a lander grabs a stranded character first?
A lander that reaches the top of the screen with a captured character loses that character for good, and the lander itself transforms into a faster, tougher mutant that actively hunts you for the rest of the run. Shoot a lander while it's still carrying someone to free them instead, then fly underneath to catch them before they hit the ground.
What do the radar and smart bomb do?
The strip along the top of the screen is a radar showing the whole planet at once, including enemies and stranded characters that are off-screen. The smart bomb button instantly destroys every enemy and bullet currently active, but you only get a limited number of uses per run.
Is Star Defender: Rescue free with no account needed?
Yes. It's free with no download and no account, and your best score saves only in your own browser.
