Star Defender: Boss Gauntlet
The same rescue mission, but every wave ends in a distinct boss fight instead of just more enemies.
How to play
- Fly with the arrow keys, WASD, the on-screen buttons, or by dragging anywhere on the screen. Your ship keeps its momentum, it isn't grid snapped.
- Press Space, tap Fire, or tap the screen to shoot in whichever direction you're facing.
- Fly close to a stranded character on the ground to pick them up, then swing back near the ground anywhere to drop them off safely. You can carry up to two at once.
- A lander that escapes off the top of the screen with a captured character turns into a tougher mutant that hunts you down. Shoot a carrying lander to free its captive instead, then catch them as they fall.
- Clearing a wave's landers summons a boss with its own distinct attack pattern. Defeat it to move on to the next wave, and watch for its telegraphed attacks.

The same defender rescue mission, now with a real boss at the end of every wave
Star Defender: Boss Gauntlet keeps every part of AnonArcade's free-roam defender arcade game intact: your ship flies in any direction with real momentum over a wrapping planet, a slight camera lookahead follows wherever you're actually traveling, and the rescue mission plays out exactly as it does in the baseline game. Stranded characters wait on the ground, landers rise up to hunt whichever one is still unclaimed, and a lander that escapes off the top of the screen with a captured character mutates into a faster, tougher enemy that actively hunts you for the rest of the run, the genre's real historical hook, unchanged here.
What's different is how each wave actually ends. Instead of the wave simply finishing once its lander quota is cleared, a boss shows up and has to be defeated before the next wave can begin, and the boss pattern genuinely changes as you climb, not just its numbers. One type sweeps back and forth at a fixed altitude, firing spread shots downward and deploying escort landers to keep the pressure on. Another mostly holds its ground and bursts out pairs of landers on a timer while taking potshots at you. A third alternates between slow hovering fire and a telegraphed, fast lock-on dash straight at your ship, so learning to read the windup matters as much as your reflexes. The escort landers a boss deploys are pure combat threats rather than human-hunters, so the rescue mission itself never pauses just because a boss is on screen.
For the exact same rescue mission without the boss encounters, try the baseline Star Defender: Rescue. For a version with drifting asteroid hazards added to the terrain instead, try Star Defender: Nebula Storm. Looking for a different kind of classic arcade action? AnonArcade's fixed-grid shooter series starts with Galaxy Invasion.
Frequently asked questions
How is Boss Gauntlet different from Star Defender: Rescue?
The rescue mission is identical: fly freely, carry stranded characters to safety, and stop landers from abducting them. In Boss Gauntlet, once a wave's regular landers are cleared, a distinct boss shows up and has to be defeated before the next wave begins, instead of the wave just ending on its own.
Do the bosses fight differently from each other?
Yes. The boss type cycles through three real patterns as waves progress: one sweeps back and forth firing spread shots and deploying escort landers, one mostly holds its ground and bursts out pairs of landers on a timer, and one alternates slow hovering fire with a telegraphed, fast lock-on charge at your ship.
Do stranded characters still need rescuing during a boss fight?
Yes, the rescue mission keeps running the whole time. The escort landers a boss deploys are pure combat threats and won't hunt stranded characters, but any left over from the wave's regular landers, or a boss's own stray fire, are still in play.
Can I use the smart bomb on a boss?
The smart bomb clears every regular enemy, enemy bullet, and escort lander on screen instantly, and it also deals real damage to whichever boss is active, though it won't defeat one outright in a single use.
Is Star Defender: Boss Gauntlet free with no account needed?
Yes. It's free with no download and no account, and your best score saves only in your own browser.
