The spinning fishing pond, on screen
Magnetic Fishing Game is a free fishing game for little children that you play in your browser. If you have ever played with the toy fishing game where plastic fish go round and round on a spinning pond, opening and closing their mouths, you know exactly how it works. Wait for a fish to open its mouth, move the magnet over it at just the right moment, and catch it!
It is made for children aged about three to six. There are no menus to read and no buttons to hunt for: just a pond, a magnet and twelve happy fish. The game talks, so children who cannot read yet can play on their own.
How to catch a fish
The pond turns slowly, and each fish opens and closes its mouth on its own little rhythm. Move the magnet with the mouse, your finger or the arrow keys, and hold it over a fish. When that fish opens its mouth, tap the screen or press the space bar, and the magnet pulls it up out of the water with a happy splash. If the mouth is closed, wait for it to open again. It is a lovely game for practising patience, timing and hand-eye coordination.
Four games in one
Free Play is the classic game: catch all twelve fish as quickly as you can, and earn up to three stars for your time. In Colors, the game asks for a colour, like "Catch a blue fish!", and your child finds a fish of that colour. In Counting, every fish has a number from 1 to 12, and you catch them in order: one, two, three and all the way up. In Letters, the fish carry letters, and the game asks you to find one, like "Find the letter C". Every prompt is read aloud, and a cheerful voice and sound celebrate each catch.
Three ponds
The Rainbow Fish pond is ready from the start, with fish in every colour of the rainbow. Catch 30 fish in total to open Ocean Friends, a pond full of sea creatures. Catch 80 to open the Duck Pond, where little ducks open and close their beaks instead. Each pond works with every game mode.
What children learn
Behind the fun, each mode practises an early learning skill. Colors teaches colour names. Counting practises the numbers 1 to 12 in order, and recognising numerals. Letters practises recognising the capital letters A to L and their names. And every catch builds fine motor control, as children learn to move the pointer carefully and tap at the right moment.
Tips for grown-ups
Turn the sound on and sit with your child for the first few catches. Start with Free Play to learn the magnet, then try Colors. On a tablet, little fingers can simply drag the magnet around. If your child finds a mode hard, let them play Free Play for a while and come back to it later. There is no way to fail, no timer in the learning modes and nothing to buy.
Why a spinning pond works so well
The real toy has been a favourite for generations because it is all about one simple, exciting moment: the mouth opens and you have to be ready. On screen it works the same way, but the fish never fall off, the magnet always works, and nobody has to tidy up afterwards. The fish open their mouths at different times, so there is always another chance coming round, which keeps younger children from getting frustrated. Each catch gets a big splash, a sound and a cheer, and the fish count keeps growing towards the next pond, which gives children a reason to come back and play again.
