A cat, a boat and a fishing rod

Kitty Goes Fishing is a free fishing game that you play in your browser. Lio, a fluffy orange cat, sits in a little wooden rowboat with his fishing rod, and he is hungry for a big catch. Help him cast his line, wait for a bite, and reel in the fish without snapping the line. Then sell the catch, buy better gear and row out to new waters.

It is a cosy, colourful fishing game with just the right amount of challenge. The controls are simple enough for younger players, but landing the biggest fish takes real timing and patience.

Casting

Hold down to charge your cast: the longer you hold, the further it goes. Let go and Lio throws the lure out over the water. Then let it sink, or hold to reel it back up. Different fish live at different depths, so try sinking deeper or keeping the lure near the surface. You can also row the boat left and right to find a new spot.

The strike and the fight

When a fish bites, an exclamation mark pops up over the water. Press quickly to strike and set the hook. Now the fight begins. Hold to reel the fish towards the boat, and watch the tension needle. When the fish pulls hard, the needle swings into the red: let go, or the line will snap and the fish will swim away. When the needle calms down, reel again. A big fish can make the needle dance for a long time.

Three lakes, 21 fish

Sunny Pond is where Lio starts, home to minnows, sunfish, perch, carp, bass, catfish, a grumpy frog and the rare golden koi. Big Pine Lake, which opens for $400, has rainbow trout, northern pike, walleye, the huge lake sturgeon and the mysterious Moon Trout. Misty Sea Bay, for $2,500, is salt water: mackerel, red snapper, bluefin tuna, octopus, swordfish and, at night, the glowing squid, the anglerfish and the ghost shark.

Day and night

Time passes as Lio fishes, and when the sun goes down, the night fish come out. Some of them glow in the dark water, and several species can only be caught at night, so stay out late if you want to fill your journal.

Rods and lures

Better rods have longer, stronger line, so you can fish deeper and fight bigger fish without snapping it: the Twig Rod, the Bamboo Rod ($120), the Fiberglass Rod ($600), the Carbon Rod ($2,200) and the Golden Rod ($7,000). Each lure attracts different fish: the Worm, the Spinner ($250), the Glow Lure ($900), which works wonders at night, and the Golden Fly ($3,000).

The journal

Every fish Lio catches is measured and added to his journal, with the biggest one of each species. There are 21 to find. Can you catch them all, and break your own size records?

Tips

When the needle goes red, let go straight away: patience lands more fish than strength. Try a new lure when the fish stop biting. Save up for a better rod before you head to Misty Sea Bay. And fish at night with the Glow Lure for the rarest catches.

A game that grows with your child

On Sunny Pond, the fish are small and forgiving, so younger players can learn to cast and reel without losing many fish. As they save up and move on to Big Pine Lake and Misty Sea Bay, the fish get bigger and fight harder, and the tension needle becomes a real test of patience. That makes Kitty Goes Fishing a good next step after the simpler little-kid fishing games, and a relaxing game for older children who just enjoy filling a collection.
