🐝 Hex Hive Numbers
Link touching cells that add up to the target.
How to play
- Pick a hive and a tier, then click Buzz In.
- Look at the target number above the honeycomb.
- Drag across touching cells whose numbers add up to the target, then let go to check.
- Or tap cells one at a time and press Check. On a keyboard: arrows move, Space adds a cell, Enter checks.
- Right chains turn to 🍯 honey and new cells drop in. Wrong chains show their real total so you can adjust.
- Stuck? The Hint button lights up where an answer starts.
A calm honeycomb puzzle for number sense
Hex Hive Numbers is a free math puzzle played on a honeycomb. Every hexagon cell holds a number, and a target number sits above the board. Find a chain of cells that touch each other and whose numbers add up to exactly the target, then drag across them. Get it right and the chain turns to golden honey, a few bees buzz off, the cells above slide down, and fresh numbers drop in from the top, with a new target ready to go. There is no timer, so it suits kids who like to think before they move.
The puzzle builds real number sense, because there is usually more than one way to reach each target and the honeycomb shape gives every cell six neighbors to try. Every target is generated from a real path on the current board, so there is always at least one answer, and the Hint button lights up where that answer starts if a player gets stuck. A wrong chain is a teaching moment rather than a penalty: the game shows its actual total, like 4 + 7 + 3 = 14, not 15, so the player can see how far off they were and adjust. Only the streak resets.
From small sums to products and long chains
Tier 1 uses the numbers 1 to 5 with targets up to 10, perfect for early addition. Tier 2 brings in numbers up to 9 and targets up to 15, and Tier 3 stretches to longer chains and targets around 20. Tier 4 adds a rule that every chain must be exactly three cells, which turns each target into a small search puzzle. Tier 5 switches to multiplication, where two touching cells must multiply to the target, and the Championship tier asks for sums of 20 to 30 using three to five cells.
Correct chains make honey, with extra for longer chains, and honey unlocks new hives: Meadow Hive, Sunflower Field, Lavender Hill, Moonlight Hive, and Royal Honey. Best streaks are saved per tier. The board is drawn as crisp vector graphics, so it looks sharp on any screen, and it works with a mouse, a touchscreen, or the keyboard alone. Hex Hive Numbers is free, runs in the browser, needs no download or account, and saves progress only in your own browser. Frequently asked questions
How do I play Hex Hive Numbers?
Find a chain of touching hexagon cells whose numbers add up to the target shown above the board. Drag across them and let go, or tap them one at a time and press Check. Correct chains turn to honey and new cells drop in.
Is there always an answer?
Yes. Every target is made from a real path of touching cells on the current board. If you get stuck, the Hint button lights up the cell where that answer starts.
What happens if my chain is wrong?
The game shows what your chain actually adds up to, like 4 + 7 + 3 = 14, not 15, then clears it so you can try again. Only your streak resets, and there is no timer.
Can I play with a keyboard?
Yes. Use the arrow keys to move around the honeycomb, Space to add the highlighted cell to your chain, Enter to check, and Escape to clear.
What math does it practice?
Addition with two to five numbers, from small sums up to 30, plus a multiplication tier where two touching cells must multiply to the target. It builds number sense and mental math.
