A basketball math game with two real skill layers, not one

Hoops & Numbers is a free basketball math game built around two layers of skill instead of one flat question-and-answer loop. First, answer a math question correctly to even earn a shot attempt, a wrong answer is a turnover with no shot at all. Then, set your shot power on a precision meter, click or tap anywhere on the bar (or use the -5/-1/+1/+5 buttons for fine control) to land your shot inside the highlighted zone before clicking Shoot. A shot dead center is a perfect swish, further out toward the edges is still a make but with a smaller bonus, and missing the zone entirely means no basket.

Five grade bands adapt both which operations appear and how big the numbers get: Grade 2 sticks to addition and subtraction within 20, Grade 3 adds the easiest multiplication tables, Grade 4 moves to full multiplication and division facts, and Grades 5 and 6 mix in bigger numbers and every operation at once. Shots are worth 2 or 3 points depending on the attempt, and every basket earns hoop points toward unlocking a new court, from the starting Backyard Hoop through School Gym, City Park, Indoor Arena, and the Championship Court.

It's free, works with a mouse, touchscreen, or keyboard, needs no download or account, and saves your hoop points and best score locally in your own browser. See the Parents & Safety page for the full privacy details, or browse the rest of the Math Games hub.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play Hoops & Numbers?

Pick a court and a grade band, then click Start Shootaround. Answer the math question to earn a shot. Click or tap the power bar (or use the -5/-1/+1/+5 buttons) to set your shot power inside the highlighted zone, then click Shoot.

How does the grade band affect the game?

Each of the 5 grade bands changes both which operations show up and how big the numbers get, from addition and subtraction within 20 for Grade 2 up to every operation mixed with bigger numbers for Grade 6.

What happens if I answer wrong or miss the shot?

A wrong answer is a turnover, no shot attempt, straight to the next possession. A missed shot just ends that possession too. Either way there's no life lost and no game over, you just keep playing.

How do I unlock new courts?

Every basket you make earns hoop points (a bonus for a perfect swish), which unlock new courts permanently once you cross each threshold, from the starting Backyard Hoop up to the Championship Court.
