A rhyming game with a rescue to finish

Rhyme Time Rescue is a free rhyming game for young children. A little animal is stuck on an island across the water, calling for help. A word appears and is read aloud, like cat, and a few word cards sit below. Pick the card that rhymes and a wooden plank drops into place on the bridge. Lay five planks and the animal trots across to safety with a burst of confetti, then the next animal needs rescuing. Puppies, bunnies, pandas, foxes, and penguins all take a turn.

Rhyming is one of the earliest reading skills, because it trains the ear to notice the ending sounds of words, the same sounds kids later spot in word families like -at and -ug. Every word in the game is spoken with the browser's built-in voice, and each rhyme is read back as a pair, so children hear why the words match. A wrong card simply fades out and the pair is read aloud so the difference can be heard. There is no timer and no game over.

From picture rhymes to odd one out

Tier 1 uses short-vowel word families like -at, -og, and -ug, with a clear picture on every card for pre-readers. Tier 2 adds more families such as -ing, -ake, and -oon, still with pictures. Tier 3 and Tier 4 remove the pictures so the words must be read, with four cards to choose from in Tier 4. Tier 5 is all about rhymes that are spelled differently, like kite and light, snail and whale, or bear and chair, which teaches that rhyming is about sound, not spelling. Tier 6 flips the question to which word does not rhyme.

Every rhyme earns hearts, and every rescue adds a bonus. Hearts unlock new places: Sunny Lagoon, Jungle River, Arctic Floe, Candy Creek, and Volcano Isle. Best streaks are saved per tier. Rhyme Time Rescue is free, works in the browser on computers, tablets, and phones with touch, mouse, or keyboard, needs no download or account, and saves progress only in your own browser. Frequently asked questions

How do I play Rhyme Time Rescue?

Listen to the word at the top, then tap the card that rhymes with it. Every rhyme adds a plank to the bridge, and five planks bring the stranded animal home.

Does it read the words aloud?

Yes. The word is spoken when it appears, the Hear it button repeats it, and each rhyming pair is read back together. The speaker button turns all sound off.

What if my child picks a word that does not rhyme?

The card fades out and both words are read aloud so the different ending sounds can be heard. There is no timer and no game over.

Why do kite and light count as a rhyme?

Rhymes are about sound, not spelling. Tier 5 practices exactly this, with pairs like kite and light, snail and whale, and bear and chair that sound alike but are spelled differently.

What age is it for?

It suits pre-K through second grade, about ages 4 to 8. The picture tiers work for pre-readers, and the word-only tiers build early reading.
