A context clues game that shows where the clue is

Context Clues Climber is a free vocabulary game about one of the most useful reading skills there is: working out what a new word means from the words around it. Each round shows a sentence with one unfamiliar word highlighted, like famished or venomous, and three possible meanings. Pick the right one and the climber scales one ledge up the mountain. Ten words reach the summit, where the flag is planted with a flourish and a bonus.

What makes it more than a quiz is what happens after each answer. The exact clue in the sentence is highlighted in gold and named, such as a synonym clue pointing to so hungry, or an antonym clue pointing to but today she was late. Over time kids learn to look for those clues on their own, in any book. A wrong choice is crossed out and the clue lights up as a hint, so the child can reread the sentence and try again. The Read it to me button reads the sentence aloud for kids who are still building reading fluency.

Every kind of context clue

Each tier focuses on one kind of clue that teachers name in class. Tier 1 uses definition clues, where the sentence explains the word, like a hole dug in the ground. Tier 2 uses synonym clues, a nearby word that means the same thing. Tier 3 uses antonym clues, where words like but, unlike, and not point to the opposite. Tier 4 uses example clues such as owls and bats for nocturnal. Tier 5 uses inference clues, where the meaning has to be figured out from what happens, and the Championship tier mixes harder words like meticulous, candid, and ominous. The wrong meanings are chosen to be believable, often including the opposite, so the clue really has to be read.

Every word earns flags, and every summit adds a bonus. Flags unlock new climbs: Alpine Peak, Red Canyon, Jungle Cliff, Glacier Wall, and Sunset Summit. Best streaks are saved per tier. Context Clues Climber is free, runs in the browser on computers, tablets, and phones with touch, mouse, or keyboard, needs no download or account, and saves progress only in your own browser.
