The classic snake game, with a hungry little train
Hungry Train takes the much-loved snake game and turns it into a cheerful train ride. A little engine with big eyes chuffs around a green meadow looking for something to eat. Steer it onto an apple and it gobbles it up with a happy crunch, and a new wagon joins the back of the train. Keep eating and the train grows longer and longer, until it snakes all the way across the board. There is nothing to download: the game runs in a browser tab on any computer, tablet or phone.
The trick, as always, is not to bump into anything. The longer the train gets, the harder it is to turn without running into your own wagons, and the engine speeds up as it grows. Every so often a shining gold star appears instead of fruit. It is worth three wagons, so it's worth going the long way round to get it.
Three ways to play
Easy Loop is made for younger players. The meadow has no fence, so driving off one edge brings the train back on the other side, and bumping into your own wagons doesn't end the game. The train just leaves a few wagons behind and carries on. Classic is the traditional challenge: there is a fence around the meadow, and bumping it or your own wagons ends the run, so the aim is the longest train you can build.
Adventure has ten boards, each with its own layout of grey rocks and blue ponds to steer around. Every board has a fruit target, from eight pieces on the first board to eighteen on the last, and clearing it unlocks the next. The later boards have narrow corridors and scattered rocks that make every turn count.
Stars and trains
In Easy Loop and Classic, growing a train of 10, 20 and 30 wagons earns up to three stars, and every Adventure board gives stars too. Stars unlock new engine colours, from the minty Mint Express to the sparkly Night Owl. Rails appear on the grass wherever the train has been and slowly fade away, so you can always see where you've driven.
Why kids love it
Snake games are one of the best ways to build planning skills and quick reactions. Children learn to think a few moves ahead, to leave themselves room to turn, and to stay calm as the train speeds up. The friendly train, the fruit and the gentle Easy Loop mode make it welcoming for younger players, while Classic and Adventure give older kids a real challenge.
Hungry Train is free, needs no account, and keeps your records and stars only in your own browser. See the Parents & Safety page for privacy details. Love snake games? Browse the Snake Games collection, or find more trains in the Train Games hub.
