How to play

  • Pick a skater and press Skate! Kai is ready straight away.
  • Press the up and down arrows (or W and S, or ▲ ▼ on a touchscreen) to switch between the three lanes.
  • Hold the right arrow or D (▶) to push for more speed. Hold the left arrow or A (◀) to slow down.
  • Ride up a ramp to launch into the air. In the air, ▶ leans forward and ◀ leans back. Land with the board flat.
  • Hold ◀ off a mega ramp to backflip. A flip is worth 1,000 points, but only if you land flat.
  • Drop onto grind rails after a kicker to grind for points. Hit ⚡ nitro pads for a burst of speed.
  • Dodge cones, bins, barriers and hydrants, and skate around cracks. Three crashes end the run.

An endless run through the skate park

Skateboard Hero is a free skateboarding game that you play in your browser. Your skater rolls along a wide, sunny skate park with three lanes. Switch lanes to dodge cones and bins, push for speed, launch off ramps, flip in the air, drop onto grind rails and grab every coin you can. The run goes on and on, and it gets faster the further you skate. How high a score can you set?

It is a side-view game, so you can see your skater clearly as they crouch on the ramp, fly through the air and stretch out their arms to balance on the rail. The skater's board has real wheels and trucks, and you can hear the rumble of the wheels on the concrete and the clack of every joint in the pavement.

Three lanes

The park has three lanes, one behind the other. You switch between them with the up and down keys. Each lane has its own obstacles and pickups, so you are always looking ahead to choose the best lane. There is always at least one clear lane, so with good timing you can get past anything. You can only switch lanes on the ground, so choose your lane before you hit a ramp.

Ramps, flips and landings

Kicker ramps are small wooden ramps that pop you into the air. Mega ramps are much taller and send you flying, and there is often a nitro pad just before a mega ramp so you hit it at top speed. In the air, you control the angle of your board. Hold the right key to lean forward and the left key to lean back. Keep the board level and you land cleanly.

If you have enough air, you can flip. Hold the left key off a mega ramp and your skater spins into a backflip. A complete flip is worth 1,000 points. But you must land with the board flat. Land at a steep angle and you crash, losing the points and one of your three lives. Land perfectly flat and you get a bonus for a perfect landing.

Grind rails

Some kickers have a long metal rail just after them. Launch off the kicker, keep the board level and drop onto the rail to grind along it. Sparks fly from the board and you score points for every moment you stay on the rail. Flip onto a rail and you get a huge bonus. But be careful: if you hit the end of a rail from the ground, you crash, so either jump onto it or switch lanes.

Obstacles and pads

Orange cones, green bins, striped barriers and red fire hydrants are all solid. Hit one and you crash. Cracks in the pavement do not make you crash, but they slow you down a lot. Blue nitro pads with arrows give you a burst of speed for a moment, which is great for mega ramps. Coins float along the lanes and above the ramps, and every coin adds ten points to your score.

Four parks

The run starts in the Skate Park, with green hills, trees, benches and graffiti on the wall. After 500 metres a yellow banner welcomes you to the Boardwalk beside the sea, with palm trees and beach umbrellas. Next comes Downtown, with tall buildings, street lamps and fire hydrants. Then Neon Night, a glowing city at night with pink and blue neon signs. After that the parks repeat, but your speed keeps rising.

Scoring and skaters

Your score adds up three things: the distance you skate in metres, ten points for every coin, and all your trick points from airs, flips, perfect landings and grinds. Your best score is saved, and it unlocks new skaters. Kai is ready from the start. Mia unlocks at a best score of 1,500, Zed at 4,000 and Nova at 8,000. Each skater has their own hoodie, cap and board.

Tips for big scores

Pick the lane with the ramp whenever you can, because air time means points. Hit nitro pads before mega ramps. Start your flip as soon as you leave the ramp, and stop leaning as you come round so you can level out before you land. Don't push for speed all the time, because a faster run gives you less time to react. And remember that every crash costs a life, so a safe landing is always better than a risky flip.

Play anywhere

The game runs in any modern browser on computers, Chromebooks, tablets and phones, with no download and no account. Use the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard, or the ▲ ▼ ◀ ▶ touch buttons on a touchscreen. Your best score, coins and skaters are saved only in your own browser. There is no violence: crashes are a cartoon tumble. See the Parents & Safety page for more.
