Hook, swing, let go

Sling Drift is a free one-button driving game with a twist. The road ahead winds back and forth with sharp bends, and in the middle of every bend stands a bright post. You can't steer the car. Instead, as you reach a corner, you hold down the button and a rope shoots out and hooks onto the nearest post. The car swings round it on the end of the rope in a smooth, smoky drift. Let go, and the car shoots off in a straight line.

So each corner is all about two moments: when to hook on and when to let go. Hook on too early or too late and the car swings round too wide or too tight, off the edge of the road. Let go too early and you cut the corner; too late and you spin round towards the verge. Get the rhythm right and the car flows from corner to corner like it's on rails.

Perfect swings and combos

Every corner you take scores points, and the score also ticks up with every metre you drive. The best way to score, though, is the perfect swing. If you hook onto the post while the car is right in the middle of the road, it swings round the exact middle of the bend and you get a Perfect bonus. Perfect swings in a row build a combo that multiplies the bonus. For the first few corners a dotted line shows the ideal path round the post, to help you learn the timing.

Faster and faster

The car starts at a comfortable speed and gets a little faster with every corner, so a long run turns into a real test of reactions. Some bends are gentle quarter turns, others are tight hairpins where the car swings right round and comes back the other way. The road is different every time you play.

Four tracks

Classic Circuit is a racing circuit on green fields, with red and white kerbs, and the easiest place to start. Desert Dunes starts a bit faster, on sandy ground. Snow Circuit has tighter corners, so the swings are quicker and there is less room for error. Neon Night is the fastest of all: a glowing road with bright kerbs on a dark background. Each track has goals of 10, 25 and 50 corners, and each goal you reach earns a star.

Stars unlock new car designs: the red Sling Racer, the Blue Bolt, the Gold Rush and the Neon Ghost. Every car handles the same, so your score is all down to your timing.

Why one-button games are so addictive

One-button games are easy to start and hard to master. There is only one thing to do, but doing it at exactly the right moment, again and again, takes rhythm and concentration. Runs are short, so it's always tempting to have another go and beat your best.
