A railroad tile puzzle you can play in your browser
Railroad Tiles is a calm, clever puzzle about building a railway one tile at a time. Each level is a small board of square tiles, like the pieces of a tile-laying board game. Some hold straight track, some curves, some crossings, and some are just grass and trees. The railway that should run from station A on the left to station B on the right has been scrambled, with the tiles turned every which way. Your job is to put it back together.
Tap a tile and it turns a quarter turn. As you line up the pieces, the part of the route that already joins up to station A glows yellow, so you can always see how far the track reaches. When the rails run all the way across, the Go button starts to pulse. Press it and the little red engine and its wagons chug across the board, round every bend and over every crossing, into station B.
Coins, locks and the turn budget
Finishing a level earns one star, but there is more to aim for. Gold coins sit on some tiles, and the train collects every coin it passes, so the best route picks them all up. Each level also has a turn budget, the number of turns needed if you never waste a move. Stay within it for the third star. Padlocked tiles are already in the right place and can't be turned, which gives you a useful clue. Undo takes back your last turn.
Later levels add crossings, where two tracks cross in a plus shape, and decoy pieces that could form tempting dead ends. The boards grow from four tiles across to seven, and the routes get longer and twistier. All thirty puzzles are the same for everyone, so friends can compare their stars.
Why tile puzzles are great for kids
Rotation puzzles like this build spatial reasoning: children picture how a piece will look after a turn and how its ends will meet the neighbouring tiles. They also practise working backwards from the goal and noticing when a choice leads to a dead end. The gentle pace, clear goal and satisfying train ride at the end make it a favourite for quiet time, car journeys and classroom breaks.
Railroad Tiles is free, needs no account, and keeps your stars only in your own browser. It works with a mouse, a touchscreen or the keyboard. See the Parents & Safety page for privacy details. Love building track? Try Toy Train Builder or Railway Switch Master, or browse the Train Games hub.
