How to play

  • Pick a toy train and a table, then click Open the Toy Box.
  • Choose a piece from the tray (Straight, Curve or Crossing) and click a square on the table to place it.
  • Click a piece again to turn it. The game tries to line new pieces up with the track next to them.
  • Straight pieces on the river become bridges, and on a hill they become tunnels. Rocks and houses can't be built on.
  • Press Go (or Space) to send the train. It stops if the track runs out or a piece doesn't join up.
  • In Puzzle Tables, reach the blue station B using as few pieces as possible for 3 stars. C switches camera, including Ride.

A toy train set you can build in your browser

Toy Train Builder turns the classic wooden train set into a game you can play on any computer or tablet. There is nothing to download: the game opens on a toy table with green felt, a little red station with a smiling engine, and a tray of wooden track pieces at the bottom. Pick a straight piece, click a square, and it snaps into place with a pop. Add a curve, click it to turn it the right way, and before long you have a railway.

When the track is ready, press Go. The toy train, an engine with a face, a chimney and a string of colourful wagons, chugs off along your track, round the bends, over the bridges and through the tunnels. If it reaches the end of the track or a piece that doesn't join up, it stops and tells you what went wrong, so you can fix it and try again.

Ten puzzle tables

The Puzzle Tables give you a job to do: join the red station A to the blue station B. The first table is just a straight line. Later tables add a corner, rocks and houses to go around, a river that needs a bridge, a hill that needs a tunnel, a maze, and a station where the train starts facing the wrong way and has to take the long way round. For every table the game works out the fewest pieces that can do the job. Match it for three stars.

Straight pieces placed on the blue river automatically become red wooden bridges, and on a green hill they become tunnels. Only straight pieces fit there, which is part of the puzzle. An eraser takes pieces away, and Undo puts back your last change.

Free Build and the Ride camera

In Free Build you get a big empty table and as many pieces as you like. Build a figure of eight with a crossing, a long loop around the edge, or a twisty railway that fills the whole table. Then switch the camera to Ride and sit on the front of the engine as it runs around your layout, watching the track come towards you. The Top camera shows the whole table from above, like a plan.

Why kids love building train tracks

Building a train track is one of the best early puzzles there is. Children plan a route, think about which way each piece needs to face, and discover how curves and crossings join up. Fixing a track that doesn't work teaches patience and problem-solving, and the reward of watching the train complete the loop never gets old. If your child enjoys building railways in block-building games, this is a gentle, focused way to play with the same idea.

Toy Train Builder is free, needs no account, and keeps your stars only in your own browser. It works with a mouse, a touchscreen or the keyboard shortcuts. See the Parents & Safety page for privacy details. Ready to drive a real train? Try Rail Driver 3D, or browse the Train Games hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is Toy Train Builder free?

Yes. It is a free train track building game that runs in a web browser with no download, account, or plugin.

How do I turn a track piece?

Click the piece again after placing it. Each click turns it a quarter turn. New pieces try to line up with the track next to them automatically.

How do I build a bridge or a tunnel?

Put a straight piece on a river square to make a bridge, or on a hill square to make a tunnel. Curves and crossings can't go there.

Why did my train stop?

The track either ran out or reached a piece that doesn't join up. The message tells you which. Add or turn pieces, then press Go again.

How do I get three stars?

Reach station B using the fewest pieces possible. The game shows the best number for each table at the top of the screen.

What age is it for?

It's designed for children from about 4 to 12. Younger players can enjoy Free Build, while the later puzzle tables are a real challenge for older kids.
