How to play

  • Choose an engine colour, then click Go Mining. Your mine is saved in this browser.
  • Tap the rock underground (or hold Space) to dig ore. Each tap adds to the pile by the mine.
  • The train loads ore at the mine and leaves when it's full. Tap the train or 🚂 Send now to send it early.
  • At the market the ore is sold for coins. Spend them on a better pickaxe, more miners, extra wagons and a faster engine.
  • Dig to a deeper layer for more valuable ore: coal, iron, copper, silver, gold and finally gems.
  • Miners keep digging while you're away, so come back later for a bonus.

An idle mining game with a train

Train Miner is a cheerful idle game about running your own little mining railway. The screen shows a green valley with a mine building and its tall headframe on the left, a market on the right and a railway between them. Below the ground is a cross-section of the mine, layer after layer of rock, with your miners working at the face. There is nothing to download: the game loads in a browser tab and your mine is saved automatically.

At the start it's just you and a pickaxe. Tap the rock and chips of coal fly out and pile up by the mine. A small red engine waits at the mine with an open wagon, and when the wagon is full it chuffs off down the line to the market, sells the coal and comes back for more. Every trip earns coins, and coins are how the mine grows.

Upgrades that make the mine grow

There are four things to buy. A better pickaxe digs more ore with every tap. Hiring miners adds workers who dig on their own, so ore keeps coming even when you are not tapping. Extra wagons let the train carry more on every trip, up to eight. A faster engine gets the ore to the market sooner. Each upgrade costs a bit more than the last, so you have to decide what to buy next.

The biggest upgrade is digging deeper. The mine starts in the coal layer, where each lump sells for two coins. Save up to dig down to iron, then copper, silver and gold, each worth much more than the one above. At the very bottom is a sparkling cave of gems, worth eight hundred coins apiece. The shaft gets longer, the lift works harder and your wagons come out heaped with brighter ore.

Milestones and stars

Nine milestones mark the way: earning your first thousand coins, reaching the iron layer, running four wagons, hiring twenty-five miners, digging down to gold, earning a million coins and finding the gem cave. Each one gives a star, and stars unlock new colours for your engine. Because the miners keep working while you are away, coming back after a break always brings a welcome-back bonus.

Why kids love idle games

Idle games are relaxing: there is always progress to make but never any pressure or danger. They also teach useful ideas in a gentle way, like saving up, choosing between upgrades and seeing how small investments grow over time. The little train carrying the ore to market makes it easy to picture how the money is made.

Train Miner is free, needs no account, and keeps your mine only in your own browser. It works with a mouse, a touchscreen or the Space bar. See the Parents & Safety page for privacy details. Want a bigger railway business? Try Railroad Tycoon, or browse the Train Games hub.
