One button, endless corners

Drift to the Right is a one-button drift game with a truck, a trailer, a zigzag road floating high in the sky and only one rule: hold to drift right, let go to drift left. The road never ends, but every corner is a little test of timing. Start the turn too late and the truck slides off the outside of the bend; start it too early and it cuts across and drops off the inside. Get it right and the truck swings round in a lovely cloud of tyre smoke, leaving dark skid marks on the road behind it, with the trailer following on its hitch.

Each run lasts as long as you can keep the wheels on the tarmac, usually somewhere between thirty seconds and a few minutes. That makes it perfect for a quick break: one more go is never more than a key press away, and your best score on every map is saved so there is always something to beat.

How to play

The truck drives by itself. All you control is the drift. Hold down the Space bar, the right arrow, the mouse button or your finger on the screen and the truck's nose swings round to the right. Let go and it swings back round to the left. Because the road is a zigzag of left and right bends, you will be pressing and releasing all the time: hold for the right-hand corners, let go for the left-hand ones.

The trick is that the truck does not turn on the spot. Like a real drift, its nose points one way while the truck keeps sliding the other way for a moment, so it needs room to swing round. Start each turn a little before the corner and let the slide carry you through the bend. Watch the skid marks: long dark marks mean a big slide.

Mind the trailer

What makes Drift to the Right different from other one-button drift games is the trailer. Every truck tows one on a hitch, and just like a real trailer it does not follow the truck's tyre marks exactly: on every bend it cuts across the inside of the corner, and on quick zigzags it swings from side to side behind you. If its wheels drop over the edge, it pulls the whole rig down with it. So a line that keeps the truck safe is not always enough; leave the trailer room on the inside of each turn, especially where the road gets narrow.

Scoring, perfects and combos

Every corner you get round scores one point, and the number in the middle of the screen counts them. If you come round a corner close to the dashed centre line it counts as a PERFECT and gives bonus points, and several perfects in a row build a fire combo worth up to five extra points per corner. Blue boost arrows on the road give three points and a burst of speed, which is great for the score but means you arrive at the next corner sooner, so be ready.

The road also changes the longer you last. The truck gets faster, the road gets a little narrower and the straight parts between the corners get shorter, until the later stretches become quick, tight zigzags that need short, sharp taps. Every tenth corner has its number painted on the road so you can see how far you have come.

Six trucks and four maps

Coins on the road are collected just by driving over them. Some sit on the centre line, others are near the edge, so going after them is a small risk. Coins are added up across all of your runs and unlock new trucks: the red pickup you start with, a box truck, a chunky monster truck, a fire truck with flashing lights and a ladder, a pink ice cream van and a big rig tractor unit with a long silver trailer. Each one pulls its own trailer, from a wooden cart of crates to a car transporter and a water tanker, but every rig drifts in exactly the same way, so the choice is only about style.

Coins also open new maps. Rooftop Run floats above a city at night, Canyon Mesa (40 coins) runs over a red desert, Icy Pass (120 coins) is a snowy mountain road where the truck slides much further before it grips, so every turn has to start earlier, and Neon Night (250 coins) glows above a bright electric city grid. Each map keeps its own best score.

Tips for a high score

Look ahead, not at the truck. The camera keeps the truck low on the screen so you can see the next two or three corners coming, and planning the next turn while you are still in this one is the secret to long runs. On short zigzags, quick taps work better than long holds, because a long hold swings the nose all the way round and the truck needs time to come back.

Do not chase every coin. A coin right on the edge of the road is worth one coin; falling off is worth nothing. Take the safe coins on the centre line and pick up the risky ones only on long straights. On Icy Pass, start every turn noticeably earlier than on the other maps, and do not panic when the truck keeps sliding: the grip comes back in a moment.

Why one-button games are so good

One-button games are some of the easiest games to pick up and some of the hardest to master. There is nothing to learn, no menus in the way and no combination of keys to remember, so anyone can play straight away, from younger players on a tablet to grown-ups on a work break. All of the skill is in the timing, which improves noticeably over a few runs. Drift to the Right is also good practice for reaction time, anticipation and staying calm when things speed up.

Controls

On a computer, hold the Space bar, the right arrow, D or the left mouse button to drift right, and release to drift left. P pauses the game and R restarts the run. After a crash, press Space or Enter to drift again straight away. On phones and tablets, hold your finger anywhere on the game or on the big orange button underneath it.

Free to play

Drift to the Right is free in the browser on computers, Chromebooks, tablets and phones, with no download and no account. Your coins, unlocked trucks and best scores are saved only on your own device. Grown-ups can read more on the Parents & Safety page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I drift?

Hold Space, the right arrow, the mouse button or your finger to drift right, and let go to drift left. The truck drives forward by itself.

Why does my truck fall off on the corners?

The truck slides before it grips, so it needs room to swing round. Start each turn a little before the corner. On Icy Pass, start even earlier.

Why did I fall when my truck was still on the road?

The trailer's wheels went over the edge. A trailer cuts across the inside of every corner, so leave it some room on the inside of each turn.

What is a Perfect?

A corner taken close to the dashed centre line. Perfects give bonus points, and several in a row build a combo worth up to 5 extra points per corner.

How do I unlock new trucks and maps?

Collect coins on the road. Coins add up over all your runs: Canyon Mesa opens at 40, Icy Pass at 120 and Neon Night at 250, and the six trucks unlock between 25 and 320 coins.

Do the trucks drive differently?

No. All six trucks drift in exactly the same way, so pick the one you like the look of.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. Hold your finger anywhere on the game, or on the big orange button under it.

Is Drift to the Right free?

Yes. It is free to play in the browser with no download, no account and nothing to buy.
