A phonics game that lets kids hear every sound
Phonics Pop is a free phonics game for early readers. Each round shows a friendly picture and a word with one sound missing, like a cat next to _at, while shiny bubbles carrying letters drift up the screen. Pop the bubble that finishes the word and it bursts into sparkles, the word fills in, and it is read aloud. Hearing the word is the heart of phonics practice, so every word is spoken when it appears, again when it is finished, and any time the 🔊 Hear it button is pressed, using the voice built into the browser.
Every picture was chosen to be clear for pre-readers, so a child who can't read the whole word yet can still use the picture as the clue and focus on the one missing sound. Letters that make the same sound as the answer, like c and k at the start of a word, are never offered as wrong choices, so the right bubble is the one that really matches what the child hears. A wrong bubble just wobbles and the word stays, with a hint to say it slowly. Only the streak resets.
From first sounds to magic e
The six tiers follow a typical kindergarten to second grade phonics sequence. Tier 1 asks for the first sound of simple words, and Tier 2 for the last sound. Tier 3 moves to the short vowel in the middle of words like pig, bed, and sun. Tier 4 practices consonant blends such as fr, st, and cl, and Tier 5 covers digraphs, the letter teams sh, ch, th, wh, and ck, at the start or end of the word. Tier 6 introduces magic e long vowel words like cake, bike, and rose.
Finished words earn stars, and every ten words fill the party meter for a burst of confetti and bonus stars. Stars unlock new skies to pop bubbles in: Sunny Sky, Under the Sea, Candy Clouds, Starry Night, and Rainbow Park. It's free, works on computers, tablets, and phones with touch, mouse, or keyboard, needs no download or account, and keeps progress only in your own browser.
