From one rowboat to a whole fleet

Fishing Fleet Tycoon is a free idle game that you play in your browser. You arrive at Sunny Harbor with fifteen dollars, just enough for a little wooden rowboat. Tap it, and off it goes to sea, coming back a few seconds later with a small catch to sell. Buy another rowboat, then a proper fishing boat, then a crab boat, and before long your harbour is busy with boats coming and going, and the money is rolling in.

It is a relaxing game to dip into. You can play it for two minutes or leave it running, and your fleet keeps growing either way.

Seven kinds of boat

Every boat type catches more fish than the one before, takes a little longer per trip, and costs a lot more. The Rowboat costs $15 and the Fishing Boat $140. The Crab Boat costs $1,600, the Trawler $18,000 and the Longliner $210,000. The Factory Ship costs $2.6 million, and the mighty Megaship $34 million. The fun of a tycoon game is watching these numbers that once seemed impossible become easy.

Captains

At first, you tap each boat to send it out. Once you can afford it, hire a captain for a boat type: the captain costs twelve times the price of one of those boats, and from then on every boat of that type sails all by itself. Captains keep your fleet working even while you are away, so when you come back, there is money waiting.

Milestones and upgrades

Owning lots of the same boat pays off. When you reach 25 boats of a type, their catch doubles. It doubles again at 50, 100, 200 and 400. Two upgrades help the whole fleet: the Fish Market, which gets you better prices for every catch, and Diesel Engines, which make every trip faster. And keep an eye on the water: every now and then a golden crate floats past the harbour. Tap it for a big cash bonus.

New ports

When you have earned enough, you can move your business to a new port. Pine Cove is a pine-covered bay, Coral Isle a tropical island with turquoise water, and Frost Fjord a snowy northern fjord. Moving means starting again with a small fleet, but each port gives you a permanent income multiplier, three times the last, so your new fleet grows much faster than the old one did.

Tips

Early on, keep tapping your boats: it is the fastest way to grow. Buy the next boat type as soon as you can afford it. Aim for the next milestone on your favourite boat, because doubling the catch is huge. Hire captains for your most expensive boats first. And never ignore a golden crate.

What kids learn

Fishing Fleet Tycoon is a gentle introduction to saving, spending and investing. Children see that spending money on a boat earns more money back, that waiting to buy something bigger can be smarter than buying lots of small things, and how numbers grow from hundreds to thousands, millions and billions. The big numbers are shown with K, M and B, which is a fun way to learn what they mean.

Watching the harbour

The harbour is drawn as a little living scene at the top of the screen: boats chug out to sea and come back loaded with fish, the water glints, and your harbour gets busier as the fleet grows. Each new port has its own sky, water and hills, so moving to Coral Isle or Frost Fjord feels like a fresh start in a new place.
