Eat or be eaten

Fishy Frenzy is a free fish game that you play in your browser. You start as a small, bright fish in a big blue sea. All around you, other fish are swimming: some smaller than you, some your size and some much, much bigger. The rule is simple: you can eat any fish that is smaller than you, and any fish that is bigger than you can eat you. Eat enough and you grow, and the fish that were dangerous a minute ago become your next snack.

It is a fast, colourful and very easy game to pick up. Your fish follows the mouse pointer or your finger, so even young players can steer it straight away. The hard part is being brave enough to chase the food while keeping one eye on the big fish behind you.

Growing up

Every fish you eat fills your growth bar. In Adventure mode you grow twice during a level: each time, your fish gets bigger and a new group of fish becomes safe to eat. Fill the bar completely to finish the level. Big fish glow red when they get close, which is your warning to swim away.

Frenzy combos and power-ups

Eat several fish quickly, one after another, and you start a Frenzy: a combo that adds bonus points for every fish in the chain. Bubbles drift through the water carrying power-ups: a speed boost to catch fast fish, a shield that protects you from one bite, and double points. Look out for the pufferfish, which puff up into a spiky ball, jellyfish that sting, and sharks that chase you across the screen.

Adventure: 15 levels, three oceans

The Adventure takes you through three oceans. The Coral Reef is bright and colourful, with plenty of small fish to start on. The Kelp Forest is greener and darker, with tall swaying weed and bigger hunters. The Deep Sea is the most dangerous of all. Each ocean has five levels. Finish a level for one star, finish it losing no more than one life for two, and finish without losing a life for three. Stars unlock new fish to play as: Goldie is ready from the start, Bluey unlocks at 6 stars, Rosa at 15, Zap at 27 and Nova at 40.

Endless and 2 Players

Endless mode is the classic way to play: you keep on growing, bigger and bigger, until something even bigger catches you. Your best score is saved. 2 Players puts two fish in the same sea on one keyboard for two minutes. Player 1 steers with W, A, S and D and player 2 with the arrow keys. Eat the other fish if you are bigger, and swim away if they are!

Tips

At the start of a level, take it slowly and eat the smallest fish first. Never swim straight at a fish that is about your size: it may be just a little bigger. Chain your eating for Frenzy bonuses. Save the shield bubble for when you are chasing a fish near a predator. And in the Deep Sea levels, keep moving: sharks are fast.

Eat-and-grow games are among the most popular fish games ever made, and it is easy to see why. The goal is clear, the controls are as simple as moving a mouse, and there is always a big, satisfying moment when your fish grows and the hunter becomes the hunted. It teaches judging size and distance and quick decision making, and there is no blood: fish are swallowed whole with a gulp.
