Gate drops, jumps and three rivals: win the motocross championship.

⭐ Stars: 0 / 48 🏆 Wins: 0 / 16 🏁 Races: 0

How to play

  • Pick a race. The first race of the Rookie Cup is open straight away and every finished race opens the next one.
  • Wait for the countdown: 3, 2, 1, GO! Then hold the up arrow or W (or the green ▶ button) to accelerate.
  • Brake with the down arrow or S. Lean back and forward with the left and right arrows, or A and D.
  • Land every jump with both wheels on the down slope to keep your speed and pass the other riders.
  • Watch the standings board to see your position. Win the race for three stars, or finish second for two.
  • If your helmet hits the dirt you restart from the last checkpoint flag, so stay smooth rather than wild.
  • Stars unlock new bike colours, and each cup has faster rivals than the last.

Race real motocross, side on

Motocross Racer is a free dirt bike racing game that you play in your browser. Roll up to the starting gate with three rival riders, watch the lights count down and twist the throttle when the gate drops. What follows is a flat-out race over jumps, bumps, sand and mud, with the other riders right alongside you. It is the closest thing to a real motocross race you can play in a web browser, and it takes only a few seconds to start.

Most side-view bike games are time trials, where you ride alone and race the clock. Motocross Racer is different. You race against three computer-controlled riders who launch off the same jumps, land in the same ruts and fight for the same line. You can see them, you can catch them, and if you make a mistake you will see them disappear into the distance. Winning a close race on the final jump is a fantastic feeling.

Four cups, sixteen races

The season is split into four cups of four races. The Rookie Cup takes place on a classic motocross track with rolling whoops and friendly tabletops, and the rookie riders are beatable once you learn to land smoothly. The Desert Series moves to the sand dunes: Dune Dash, Sandstorm, Mesa Motocross and the Desert Final have big soft dunes, sandy patches that slow you down and long straights where speed matters.

The Forest Series races through Pine Track, Muddy Ruts, Log Jump Valley and the Forest Final, with sticky mud, steep wooded hill climbs and creek jumps. Finally, the Pro Championship runs at dusk under an orange sky. Pro Rounds 1, 2 and 3 and the Championship Final have the biggest doubles and triples in the game and the fastest rivals, who rarely make mistakes. Win the Championship Final and you are the motocross champion.

Motocross track features

Whoops are rows of small bumps that shake the bike. Riding them fast means skimming across the tops, while riding them slowly means bouncing through every dip. Tabletops are jumps with a flat top: if you come up short you land on the flat, and if you have speed you clear it and land on the down slope. Doubles and triples are two or three jumps in a row that you can clear in one big leap if you hit the take-off fast enough.

Step-ups launch you onto a higher level, so you need to land on top rather than smashing into the face. Rhythm sections are sets of jumps close together where the best riders find a smooth rhythm, jumping some and rolling others. Sand and mud slow your back wheel down, so pick the firm line and keep the throttle steady instead of spinning the wheel.

How to win races

Get a good start: hold the gas as soon as the countdown says GO. Always try to land on the down slope of a jump rather than the flat or the up slope, because landing on the down slope keeps all your speed. Use the lean keys in the air to match the angle of the landing. Do not flip in the air in Motocross Racer, because flips do not take time off here and they put you at risk of a crash that costs you several places.

If you crash, you go back to the last checkpoint flag and lose time, but the race is never over until the finish line. The standings board shows how far ahead or behind you are, so keep pushing and look for a jump where you can pass. A smooth, steady ride usually beats a wild one.

Stars and bike colours

Win a race for three stars, finish second for two, and finish third or fourth for one. Stars unlock six bike colours: Red Rocket, Blue Bolt, Green Machine, Desert Fox, Neon Ghost and the Champion Gold bike. The stat bar above the game keeps track of your stars, your race wins and how many races you have entered.

A racing game for all ages

Motocross Racer has no violence: crashes are cartoon tumbles and the rider jumps straight back on the bike. The Rookie Cup is gentle enough for younger kids who are learning the controls, and the Pro Championship gives older players and grown-ups a real challenge. It is a fun way for children who love dirt bikes, supercross and motocross to enjoy the sport safely.

Play anywhere

The game runs in any modern browser on computers, Chromebooks, tablets and phones, with no download and no account. How do I earn three stars?

Do flips make me faster?

No. In Motocross Racer flips do not take time off, so the fastest way round is smooth jumps that land on the down slope.
