A monster truck stadium tour
Monster Truck Freestyle 3D puts you behind the wheel of a giant monster truck in front of a packed stadium. It is built like a real monster truck show: every stadium on the tour hosts three events, and you compete in all of them. First comes Racing, a two-lap duel against a rival truck. Then Skills, where you spin donuts and balance wheelies against the clock. And finally Freestyle, the event everybody comes for, where you have 75 seconds to crush cars, fly off the ramps, backflip, spin and show off for the judges.
Everything runs in your web browser in full 3D. The trucks have huge soft suspension, tyres taller than a person and enough power to launch off a ramp and clear a whole row of parked cars. You can watch from the chase camera, a wider TV-style camera or a side view, and switch at any time with C or the camera button.
Racing: beat the rival to the line
The racing track runs round the stadium infield, a long barrier lined with stacked tyres. There is a jump on each straight and a tight bend at each end, and you have to do two laps. Your rival waits in the other lane, the lights count down from three, and then it is flat out. The rival truck brakes for the bends and takes the jumps cleanly, so you have to do the same: carry speed out of the turns, hit the ramp straight and land on all four wheels. Win the race for two stars and win it under the target time for three. The rivals get faster at every stadium on the tour.
Skills: donuts and wheelies
Skills is a 60-second show of car control. To spin a donut, slow down, hold the steering all the way to one side and keep the gas on: the back of the truck slides round and round in a cloud of dirt, and every full circle scores points. Two painted rings with cones mark good donut spots.
A wheelie is trickier. Hold the trick button while you drive and the front wheels lift off the ground. Now you have to balance: the gas lifts the nose higher, letting go of the gas lets it drop, and if you lean back too far the truck flips over backwards. Watch the wheelie meter in the corner of the screen. Holding the nose in the middle of the meter doubles the points, and only wheelies of at least a second count. In Skills, only donuts and wheelies score, so practise both.
Freestyle: impress the judges
Freestyle is where monster trucks really show off. The stadium floor is full of features: two big jumps with rows of cars parked in the gaps, a dirt mound in the middle, piles of cars to flatten, and in the later stadiums corner kickers, more car rows and, at the World Finals, a yellow school bus. You have 75 seconds, and almost everything scores:
Crushing a car is worth 100 points. Big air of almost a second or more scores for every second in the air. A backflip is worth 1,000 and a 360 spin 600. Donuts score 300 each and wheelies score for every second you hold them. Crashing costs 300. Just like real freestyle judges, ours get bored of the same trick: every time you repeat a trick it is worth a little less, so mix them up. When the time runs out, three judges hold up their scores out of ten.
How to backflip a monster truck
Go fast at one of the big jumps, drive straight up the ramp and tap the trick button as soon as you are in the air. The truck rotates backwards through a full flip and lands on its wheels if you have enough height. If you tap too late you may not get round in time, and a truck that comes down on its roof or its back crashes. Faster trucks flip quicker, which makes double backflips possible on the biggest jumps. Spins work the same way: steer left or right while you are in the air to spin the truck round, and let go when it is pointing forward again so it lands straight.
Four stadiums and four trucks
The tour starts at the Dust Bowl Arena on a sunny afternoon. The Thunder Dome opens at 6 stars, Steel City Stadium under the floodlights at 14 stars and the World Finals at 22 stars. Each stadium has bigger jumps, tougher rivals and higher score goals. There are 36 stars to win in total.
Stars also unlock new trucks. You start in Mud Boss, an orange workhorse. Shark Bite has a fin on the roof and opens at 5 stars, Robo Rex with spikes down its back at 12 and the horned Thunder Bull at 20. Each new truck is a little faster, grips a little better and flips a little quicker, which helps in every event.
Tips for big scores
In Racing, brake a little before the bends instead of sliding into the barrier, and keep the truck straight on the jumps. In Skills, alternate donuts and wheelies so you are never waiting for speed. In Freestyle, plan a route: jump one big ramp, turn round with a donut, jump the other ramp with a backflip, then drive over the car piles on the way back. Variety beats repetition. And always land on four wheels: a crash costs points and precious seconds.
Controls
On a computer: W or the up arrow is gas, S or the down arrow is brake and reverse, A and D or the left and right arrows steer, Space is the trick button, C changes the camera and P pauses. On phones and tablets, on-screen buttons appear for steering, gas, brake and the trick.

Frequently asked questions
How do I do a backflip?
Drive fast up one of the big jumps and tap Space (or the 🔄 TRICK button) as soon as the truck leaves the ramp. The truck flips backwards and lands on its wheels if it has enough height.
How do I do a wheelie?
Hold the trick button while driving. Tap the gas to keep the front wheels up, let go to let them down, and don't lean back too far or the truck flips over.
How do I spin donuts?
Slow down, steer all the way to one side and hold the gas. The truck slides round in circles and every full circle scores.
How do the freestyle judges score?
Crushes, big air, backflips, 360 spins, donuts and wheelies all score points. Repeating the same trick is worth less each time, so variety earns the best judges' scores.
How do I unlock more stadiums and trucks?
Win stars in any event. Stadiums open at 6, 14 and 22 stars, and trucks at 5, 12 and 20 stars.
Can I play on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Steering, gas, brake and trick buttons appear on touch screens.
Is Monster Truck Freestyle 3D free?
Yes. It is free to play in the browser with no download, no account and nothing to buy.
