Your own harbour

Boat Simulator 3D is a free boat driving game that you play in your browser. You start at the piers of a busy harbour town with a lighthouse on the rocks, boats moored along the quays and six islands out in the bay. Take the wheel of a little speedboat, open the throttle and head out to sea. When you are ready for work, open the job board and start earning money as a real boat captain.

Every boat floats on a real 3D ocean. Waves lift the bow, a wake spreads out behind you and the boat leans into its turns. The bigger the boat, the more it feels it: a speedboat darts around, while a ferry takes ages to turn and a container ship glides for hundreds of metres after you stop the engine.

Five boats

The Speedboat is quick, light and great fun to drive. The Fishing Boat unlocks when you have earned $500 in your career, and can go on fishing trips. The Harbour Tug, at $1,500, is slow but very strong, and it is the boat that can tow other boats with its rope. The Passenger Ferry, at $4,000, carries people between the islands. And the Container Ship, at $9,000, is a huge cargo ship stacked with containers that needs real care to steer.

Jobs

Water Taxi: pick up a passenger at one pier and drop them off at another. Island Supply Run: carry supplies out to one of the islands. Fishing Trip: take the fishing boat to the fish buoy and wait there while the crew fills the hold. Tow Job: hook a broken-down boat with the tug's rope and tow it back to the harbour. Ferry Route: call at three island piers in a row. Container Run: take the container ship out to the anchorage and bring it back. Every job pays, and harder jobs with bigger boats pay more.

How to dock

Docking is the real skill in this game. At every stop a green box shows the berth beside the pier. Bring your boat inside the box, line it up with the pier and slow down until you have almost stopped. Boats do not have brakes: to slow down you go astern (into reverse), and the boat keeps drifting for a while. Come in slowly, at a gentle angle, and straighten up at the last moment. Bumping the pier is not a disaster, but a smooth, slow arrival is always faster in the end.

Three modes

Career is the main game: take jobs, earn money and unlock the bigger boats. Free Roam is a sunny day with no rules and no jobs: drive any boat you have unlocked, explore the islands and hunt for the golden buoys. Night Harbour turns out the lights: the harbour glows, the lighthouse beam sweeps across the water and the swell is bigger. Switch on your lights with L and sound the horn with H.

Golden buoys

Twelve golden buoys are hidden around the map: behind islands, in quiet coves and far out at sea. Drive through one to collect it. Can you find all twelve?

Tips

Slow down early. Most bumps happen because a boat is still moving faster than it looks. Use the rudder while you are still moving: a rudder only works when water is flowing past it. Switch camera views with C: the high view is great for docking. With the container ship, start every turn long before you need it. And on a tow job, drive slowly so the boat behind you follows smoothly.
