Mayday!
Coast Guard Rescue 3D is a free rescue boat game that you play in your browser. The radio crackles, someone is in trouble at sea, and you are on duty. Race your rescue boat out of the Coast Guard Station, find the people who need help, get them safely on board and bring them home. Twelve missions take you from a tired swimmer on a sunny morning to a hurricane with people in the water everywhere.
The harbour is a real 3D world with islands, beaches, a lighthouse on the rocks and boats going about their business. Waves rock your boat, spray flies from the bow, and when the weather turns, the sea gets rough, the rain lashes down and the fog rolls in.
Saving swimmers
People in the water are marked on the map and by the arrow. Drive close, then slow right down and stop next to the swimmer: come in too fast and you will just go past. Once you are slower than five knots and right alongside, they climb aboard. Every rescue boat has a number of seats, so in the big missions you may have to bring one group home and go back for more. Swimmers get colder and weaker while they wait, so be quick.
Fires and tows
When a boat is on fire, drive within 15 to 45 metres and hold the space bar (or the water button) to spray the water cannon. The cannon aims itself at the nearest flames; each fire takes a little while to put out, and a boat that burns too long will sink. When a boat has broken down, get close and press E (or the hook button) to throw a tow rope, then tow it gently back to port. Take turns slowly, or the boat behind will swing wide.
Twelve missions
First Call is a tired swimmer near the station. Capsized Kayak has two kayakers in the water near Gull Island. Engine Failure is your first tow. Boat on Fire mixes the water cannon with two people who jumped overboard. Man Overboard has three people drifting east on the current. Lost Kayaker is a search in thick fog, where the sonar pings faster as you get close. Two Calls makes you choose which emergency to answer first. Night Search is in the dark near Lighthouse Rock, where you look for red flares and flashing strobes. Burning Ferry has four fires to put out and four swimmers. Storm on the Rocks is a race to hook a sailboat before it drifts onto the rocks. Medical Evacuation picks up a patient from Shell Beach. And Hurricane Rescue is the big one: six swimmers and a burning boat, with more people than seats.
Three rescue boats
The Rescue RIB is fast and nimble and seats four. The Patrol Boat unlocks at 9 stars and seats six. The Response Cutter unlocks at 20 stars: it is big and steady in a storm and seats ten. Each mission gives up to three stars; three stars need a time under par with at most one bump.
Rescue tips
Slow down well before you reach a swimmer: a rescue boat drifts on after you let go of the throttle. In fog, trust the sonar ping and turn towards the direction where it speeds up. At night, switch on the searchlight with L and look for flares. In a storm, keep your speed down so the waves do not throw you around. And when the boat is full, head straight back to the station: the green box at the dock is where survivors are handed over.
A kind game about helping
There are no villains in this game, just people who need help and a crew who helps them. Children practise planning a route, choosing what to do first, steering carefully and staying calm under pressure. Nothing is scary or gory: if you are too slow, the mission ends with a tip on how to do better, and you can try again straight away.
