How to play

  • Choose a car and a drive, then press Start Driving.
  • W or the up arrow is the gas pedal and S or the down arrow is the brake. Keep holding the brake when you have stopped to reverse.
  • Steer with A and D or the left and right arrows. Space is the handbrake: pull it in a turn to slide round the corner.
  • In the errand modes, follow the blue arrows on the road and the turn-by-turn directions at the top. Stop inside the green circle to finish each stop.
  • Stop at red traffic lights and keep to the 30 mph speed limit. In Rules of the Road each red light costs 20 points and each bump costs 10.
  • Press C to change the camera, L for lights, H for the horn, Q and E for indicators and R to put the car back on the road. P pauses.
  • On phones and tablets, use the steering buttons on the left and the gas and brake pedals on the right.

A city driving simulator in your browser

Car Driving Simulator 3D puts you behind the wheel in Maple City, a busy little 3D town you can drive around freely. There are four-lane streets with lane markings and zebra crossings, traffic lights at every junction, office towers downtown, streets of houses with red and grey roofs, green parks, street lamps and a ring road all the way round. Dozens of other cars drive the streets with you. They keep to their lanes, stop at red lights, wait behind each other and turn left and right at the junctions, so the city always feels alive.

The car drives like a real one, just a little more forgiving. It has an automatic gearbox that changes up as you speed up, brakes that squeal if you slam them on, and a reverse gear when you hold the brake at a stand. Steering is sharp at low speed and gentler at high speed, and pulling the handbrake in a corner makes the back end slide, so you can even drift. Hit a wall or another car and you bounce off with a thud, but nothing ever gets hurt.

Five ways to drive

Free Drive lets you explore the whole city with no timer; press N to switch between day and night. City Errands sends you to five stops around town, from the bakery to the library, with a GPS that paints blue arrows on the road and tells you which way to turn next. Checkpoint Rush is a race through ten gates at junctions across the city, with a par time to beat. Night Cruise is a set of errands after dark, when the office windows light up, the street lamps glow and your headlights light the way.

Rules of the Road is the driving test. You drive four trips and start with 100 points. Running a red light costs 20, bumping into anything costs 10, and driving over the 30 mph limit slowly takes points away too. Finish with 90 or more for three stars. It is a fun, low-pressure way to learn what traffic lights mean, why speed limits matter and how to stop smoothly at the right place.

Cars, cameras and controls

You start with a nippy city hatchback. Earn stars to unlock a family sedan, a tall SUV and a low, fast sports coupe with a racing stripe. Switch between a chase camera, a far chase view, a bonnet camera, a cockpit view and a slowly orbiting camera at any time. Your car has working headlights, brake lights that come on when you slow down, reversing lights and indicators that switch themselves off after the turn.

On a computer you drive with the arrow keys or W, A, S and D. On a phone or tablet, big buttons appear on the screen: steering on the left, gas and brake pedals on the right, and a handbrake button.

Why kids love driving games

Driving games are about freedom and control: choosing where to go, judging speed into a corner and parking exactly in the right spot. A city simulator adds planning and patience, reading a map, following directions and waiting for a green light. Those are the same skills that make real passengers into good future drivers.

Car Driving Simulator 3D is free, needs no download or account, and saves your stars and best times only in your own browser. See the Parents & Safety page for privacy details. For more driving, try City Drive, fly above the traffic in Flying Car City, or browse every game in Car Games.
