Speed up with every right answer
Jet Ski Math Race is a free math game that you play in your browser. Four jet skis line up at the start of a race across the bay: yours and three rivals. The rivals start racing on their own, but your jet ski only moves when you answer a math question. Get it right and your jet ski bursts forward in a spray of water. Get it wrong and the engine sputters. Answer eighteen questions correctly and you reach the finish buoys. Can you get there first?
It is a fun way to practise math facts until they become fast and automatic, which is exactly what children need for mental math, bigger sums and everything that comes after.
Five skills
Choose the facts you want to practise. Adding to 10 has questions like 3 + 4, perfect for younger children. Adding to 20 goes up to sums like 8 + 7. Subtracting covers facts within 20, like 15 − 6. Times tables practises the 2 to 10 times tables. And Mixed facts throws in addition, subtraction and multiplication together. Each question shows four answers to choose from.
Three rival speeds
The rivals race at a steady pace, and you choose how fast. On Easy, they take about two minutes to finish, so there is plenty of time to think. Medium is a real race, and Fast is for children who know their facts by heart. Start on Easy and move up when you are winning every race.
Four locations
Tropical Bay, with sandy beaches and palm trees, is ready from the start. Win two races to unlock River Run, with pine trees along the banks. Sunset Harbor, with a lighthouse against a purple sunset sky, unlocks after five wins, and Arctic Sprint, racing among the ice, after nine.
Answers per minute
The game keeps track of your best speed in answers per minute. It is a great way to see progress: as the facts become automatic, your answers per minute go up, and races that were hard become easy.
Tips for fast facts
Accuracy beats speed: a wrong answer costs you time, so it is better to be sure. Use the number keys 1 to 4 to answer faster than with the mouse. Practise one skill until you win easily, then try Mixed. For times tables, start with the 2s, 5s and 10s, then the 3s and 4s, and save the 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s for last.
For teachers and parents
Jet Ski Math Race works well as a short warm-up at the start of a lesson or a quick daily practice at home. Each race takes a couple of minutes, and the skill choices line up with first, second, third and fourth grade fact fluency goals: addition and subtraction within 20, then multiplication facts. There are no ads, no sign-up and no chat. See the Parents & Safety page for more.
Why fact fluency matters
Knowing math facts by heart frees up a child's thinking for everything else: multi-digit sums, word problems, fractions and algebra all go faster and feel easier when 7 + 8 and 6 x 7 come instantly. Racing turns the repetition that builds fluency into something children actually want to do again and again. Because the rivals race at a steady pace, every race is a clear, friendly challenge: answer accurately and quickly enough, and you win. As facts become automatic, children will notice they can win on Medium, and then on Fast.
Play anywhere
Jet Ski Math Race runs in any modern browser on computers, Chromebooks, tablets and phones, with no download and no account. Tap the answer buttons or use the number keys. Wins, best speed and locations are saved only in your own browser.
