Horn OK Please
Indian Truck Driver 3D puts you in the cab of one of the most famous trucks in the world: the hand-painted Indian goods truck. Its cab is painted in bright saffron, blue, green or red, the front is covered in flowers and patterns, coloured tassels hang from the visor, and the wooden cargo body has painted panels on every side. On the tailboard, of course, are the words every driver in India knows: HORN OK PLEASE. It means "sound your horn before you overtake", and on Indian roads everybody does.
Your job is to haul a load from the mandi, the tea estate or the cotton yard to a godown or market a few kilometres away, without breaking the rules, damaging the load or running late. It is a full truck driving simulation in 3D, played in your web browser.
Drive on the left
India drives on the left side of the road, like Britain, Japan and Australia. Your lane is the left-hand one, oncoming traffic passes on your right, and you park in bays on the left side of the road. Drifting over to the right for more than a moment costs points, and the HUD reminds you to keep left. Speeds are in kilometres per hour: trucks may do 60 km/h on the highway, 40 or 50 on the coast and in the hills, and 30 or 40 through towns. Speed cameras watch for anyone going faster.
Cows, rickshaws and buses
Indian roads are busy and full of surprises. Yellow-and-green auto-rickshaws buzz past, red state buses and other trucks come the other way, and every so often a cow is standing calmly in the middle of your lane. Cows are sacred in much of India and they never hurry. A message tells you when one is ahead: slow down and press H, or the horn button, to honk. The cow turns and ambles off to the side of the road. If you bump into a cow, you lose points.
Petrol pumps, dhabas and check posts
Every job has stops along the way. At a petrol pump, park in the bay and press F to fill the tank with diesel, which is paid for out of your earnings. A dhaba is a roadside restaurant where truck drivers stop to eat and rest; park there and press F for a chai break, which resets the tiredness meter. Drive for too long without a break and the screen starts to darken.
At an RTO check post the truck must roll slowly onto the weighbridge and wait for the green light. Go over it too fast and you are fined. At a state border check post you come to a full stop at the barrier while your permit and e-way bill are checked. And at a toll plaza, slow down and your FASTag beeps to open the barrier. Skipping a stop costs points.
Five jobs across India
Punjab Plains: wheat sacks from the Ludhiana mandi past golden mustard fields to a godown in Ambala. Western Ghats: tea chests from a Munnar tea estate down steep hairpin bends to the Kochi port warehouse, with an RTO check post on the way. Golden Quadrilateral: cotton bales along India's great highway from Nagpur to a Surat textile mill, through a toll plaza and a state border. Konkan Coast: bananas along the Arabian Sea from Ratnagiri to the Goa fruit market. Deccan Night: onions from the Nashik mandi to Hyderabad after dark, with every kind of stop on the way. And Free Roam is an endless highway with no deadline.
Scoring and pay
Every delivery is scored out of 100. Bumps, harsh braking and cornering that shift the load, damage to fragile cargo like bananas or tea, speeding, driving on the wrong side, skipping stops, running out of fuel, getting too tired and arriving late all cost points. The load pays out in rupees according to your score, minus what you spent on diesel and tolls. Score 88 or more for three stars, 70 or more for two.
Stars unlock new trucks: start in the saffron Kesari, then earn the Neela Blue at 4 stars, the Hara Green at 8 and the Raja Red & Gold at 12. Each one is a little quicker and stronger than the last.
Tips for the road
Slow right down before the hairpins in the Ghats: a loaded truck rolls and the load slides if you corner too fast. Watch the fuel and tiredness gauges and plan your stops. Pull into bays gently and line the whole truck up inside the yellow box before pressing F. Honk early when you see a cow, not when you are already on top of it. And at night, turn your lights on with L.
Controls
On a computer: W or the up arrow accelerates, S or the down arrow brakes (hold it when stopped to reverse), A and D steer, F refuels, takes a break or unloads at a stop, H sounds the horn, C changes the camera, L switches the lights, Q and E work the indicators, R puts you back on the road and P pauses. On phones and tablets, on-screen buttons give steering, accelerator, brake and the stop action.
