🤸 Aerial Ski Flips

Fly 15 metres up, flip, twist and stick the landing. Olympic aerials in 3D.

The highest flips in skiing

Aerial skiing is the most acrobatic event in the Winter Olympics. Skiers race down a short in-run, hit a steep kicker that points almost straight up, and fly 15 metres into the sky, spinning through two or three flips and several twists before landing on a steep hill. Aerial Ski Flips is a free 3D game that lets you try it. Choose your trick, hit the kicker at the right speed, control your rotation in the air, and stick the landing in front of three judges.

Single, double and triple kickers

There are three kickers. The single is the smallest and is for one-flip tricks. The double is bigger and steeper, for two flips. The triple is the giant, for three flips. Each one needs the right approach speed: on the in-run, tuck with W to go faster or brake with S to slow down, and aim for the green speed zone. Too slow and you will not get round; too fast and you over-rotate.

Flips and twists

Your rotation starts at the kicker, but you control it in the air. Tucking (holding W, down or Space) pulls you into a ball so you flip faster. Opening up (letting go) stretches you out so you flip slower. A ring around your skier shows when it is time to open up for the landing. Twists are turns around your body while you flip: tap A or D for each one, but only while you are laid out, because you cannot twist in a tuck. A Back Full is one back flip with one twist; a Back Full-Double Full-Full is three flips with four twists.

The landing

The landing hill is a steep 37 degrees, and you must arrive with your skis flat on it. Land square and the judges are happy. Land a little short or long and you lose landing points; touch a hand down and you lose more; land on your back and it is a crash. Getting the right number of flips matters too: one flip short or long is a fall.

Judged like the real thing

Three judges score each jump: air (0 to 2 points, for take-off, height and distance), form (0 to 5, for body position and twists) and landing (0 to 3). The total is multiplied by the degree of difficulty, so a clean triple can score twice as much as a perfect single. That is the big decision in aerials: play safe or go for the triple?

World Cup and Trick Book

The World Cup has five events: the Rookie Cup, Junior Cup, Pro Cup, Elite Cup and the Olympic Final. In each one you jump twice against nine rivals, picking your trick each time, and the two scores are added. The Trick Book is a list of tricks from the Back Lay to the Back Double Full-Double Full-Full; land each one well for up to three stars. Stars unlock outfits: Skyline, Emerald and Golden Eagle.

Tips

Learn the Back Lay and Back Full on the single before trying a double. Watch the speed bar on the in-run every time. Pop right at the lip. Twist only while open, and finish your twists early. When the ring says OPEN, open up, even if it feels early.

About aerials

Freestyle aerials became an Olympic sport in 1994. Athletes train on water ramps in summer, landing in a swimming pool, before trying the jumps on snow. The best jumpers perform triple flips with five twists. It takes years of practice, but in this game you can try it in an afternoon.
