๐๏ธ Ski Mountaineering 3D
Skin up, bootpack, switch gear, race down. The new Olympic sport in 3D.
How to play
- Climbing: alternate A and D (โ โถ) in a steady rhythm. Faster is quicker but tiring: watch the stamina bar.
- Press Space (โคด๏ธ) for a kick turn at every corner of the zigzag track.
- Bootpack: skis on your back, same left-right rhythm, a bit quicker.
- Transitions: press the keys shown, in order, as fast as you can.
- Downhill: A and D steer, W tucks, S brakes. Ski through the gates.
- Beat the rivals to the finish.
What is ski mountaineering?
Ski mountaineering, or skimo for short, is racing up and down mountains on skis. Racers climb with climbing skins stuck under their skis, hike the steepest parts on foot with their skis strapped to a backpack, switch their gear in a flash at the top, and then race back down. It joined the Olympics at the 2026 Winter Games, and it is one of the toughest endurance sports there is. Ski Mountaineering 3D is a free game that lets you try a skimo race from the start line to the finish.
Climbing on skins
Most of a skimo race is uphill. You climb a skin track that zigzags up the mountain, and each step is a key press: alternate A and D (or the โ โถ buttons) in a steady rhythm. The faster your rhythm, the faster you climb, but your stamina bar drains, and when it is empty you slow right down. Pressing the same foot twice makes you shuffle, and tapping too fast makes you slip. The best racers find a rhythm they can hold.
At every corner of the zigzag you need a kick turn: press Space as you reach the switchback to swing your skis round. Miss it and you stumble and lose time.
The bootpack
Some slopes are too steep for skins. That is where the bootpack comes in: your skis go on your backpack and you climb a staircase of footsteps kicked into the snow. It works the same way, left, right, left, right, but the rhythm is quicker and the stamina cost is higher.
Transitions
Transitions are where races are won and lost. At the top of a climb you have to change from climbing mode to downhill mode: rip the skins off, switch your boots to ski mode, click into your skis. At the bottom you do it the other way round. In the game, the steps appear on screen and you press each key in order as fast as you can. A clean transition takes a few seconds; a messy one can cost you the race.
The downhill
Then you ski down, steering through gates with A and D, tucking with W on the straights and checking your speed with S. After all that climbing, it feels like flying.
Race formats
The World Cup includes the three main skimo formats. The Sprint is a short, explosive race with one climb, a bootpack, transitions and a quick descent. The Vertical Race is pure climbing to the top. The Individual is the long one, with several climbs and descents. The season ends with the Olympic Sprint Final. Rival racers are on the course with you, so you always know if you are winning.
Transition Trainer
The Transition Trainer is a practice mode for gear changes only, with Rookie, Pro and Olympic levels. It is great for getting faster, and it earns stars too.
Tips
Do not start too fast: a steady rhythm wins. Let your stamina recover a little on the gentle parts. Watch for the corner markers so your kick turns are on time. Learn the transition sequences in the trainer. And on the downhill, do not throw away your lead by missing a gate.
Real skimo
Skimo racers use very light skis, boots and bindings, and climbing skins that grip the snow going up but slide going forwards. Races take place in ski resorts and in the wild mountains, and the best athletes climb more than 1,000 metres of height in under an hour. It is a sport for people who love the mountains as much as speed.

What is a kick turn?
