Mogul skiing, the bumpiest sport on snow

Moguls Run 3D is a free mogul skiing game that captures one of the most exciting events at the Winter Olympics. A steep slope is covered in rows of big snow bumps, the moguls, and you ski straight down through them, knees pumping like pistons, absorbing every bump without losing your line. Halfway down and at the bottom, two kickers throw you into the air for a trick. Then the judges score your turns, your air and your speed. It looks crazy, it feels amazing, and it is all about rhythm.

Absorb every bump

The secret of moguls is absorption: bending your legs as you go over each bump so your upper body stays smooth. In the game, you tap Space (or the ⤵️ button) just as you reach the top of each mogul. A rhythm bar at the bottom of the screen helps: a dot slides towards a line, and you tap when it gets there. Hit the timing and your skier flows down the field. Miss it and you get bounced into the back seat, losing balance; lose too much and you crash. It plays almost like a music game, with the bumps as the beat.

The zipper line

A blue lane runs down the course: the zipper line, the fastest path through the bumps. Steer with A and D to stay in it. Stray out and the bumps get messy, your rhythm breaks and the judges take points off your turns. Press W to go faster and S to check your speed, but remember that faster means the bumps arrive more quickly.

Two kickers and five tricks

Every course has two kickers. Press Space right at the lip to pop high, then do a trick before you land: a 360 with left or right, a Cork 720 by pressing the same arrow twice, a Back Tuck (a backflip) with up, an Iron Cross with down, or a Twister with Space. Bigger tricks score more air points, but you have to finish them before you touch down or you crash.

Judged like the Olympics

Real mogul skiing is scored on three things, and so is this game: Turns count for 60 percent (rhythm and staying in the line), Air for 20 percent (the height, difficulty and landing of your two jumps), and Speed for 20 percent (your time). A fast run with sloppy turns will not win; a clean, rhythmic run with two good tricks usually does.

World Cup and Dual Moguls

World Cup has four courses against seven rivals: Bunny Bumps, Blue Zipper, Black Diamond and the Olympic Final, each steeper and bumpier than the last. Finish on the podium for stars. Dual Moguls puts you side by side with a rival on a twin course: quarter-final, semi-final and final, first one down with the better score goes through. Stars unlock new outfits: Teal Wave, Snow Camo and Flame.

Tips

Listen to the rhythm: once you find it, the bumps feel easy. Look at the rhythm bar, not the skier. Do not go faster than you can handle; speed is only 20 percent of the score. Before each kicker, get your timing right so you pop at the lip. Start with a Back Tuck or a 360 and save the Cork 720 for when you feel confident.

About moguls

Mogul skiing has been an Olympic sport since 1992. The bumps form naturally on steep runs as skiers turn in the same places, and competition courses are built with regular moguls and two jumps. Dual moguls, two skiers racing side by side, became an Olympic event too. It is a sport of strong legs, quick feet and a lot of style.
