🚵 Mountain Bike Racer

Roots, rocks, drops and dirt jumps: 20 downhill trails to race.

⭐ Stars: 0 / 60 🏁 Levels: 0 / 20 🔄 Flips: 0

How to play

  • Pick a trail. Trail 1 is open straight away and every finished trail opens the next one.
  • Hold the up arrow or W (or the green ▶ button on a touchscreen) to pedal, and the down arrow or S to brake.
  • Lean back and forward with the left and right arrows, or A and D. In the air, leaning rotates the bike.
  • On steep climbs lean forward so the front wheel stays down, and keep pedalling so you don't stall.
  • On drops and steep descents lean back a little and land with both wheels together.
  • If your helmet touches the ground you go back to the last checkpoint flag. Press R to jump back yourself.
  • Each backflip or frontflip takes 1 second off your time. Fast rides earn three stars and unlock new bike colours.

Race down real mountain bike trails

Mountain Bike Racer is a free mountain bike game that you play in your browser. Clip in, grab the handlebars and race against the clock down twenty side-view MTB trails. Every trail is a little journey: you climb out of a valley, weave through tree roots, rattle over a rock garden, pop off a dirt jump, sail over a creek and fly down the final descent to the finish line. It is a racing game, a stunt game and a physics game all at once, and it plays in seconds without a download.

Unlike a motorbike, your mountain bike runs on leg power. It accelerates more slowly and has less pull on steep slopes, so the best riders think about momentum. Carry speed out of every descent into the next climb, choose your moment to pedal hard, and you will flow along the trail instead of grinding to a halt halfway up a hill.

Four worlds, twenty trails

The adventure begins in a pine forest. First Pedal teaches the controls on gentle hills, Root Run fills the floor with bumpy roots, Creek Crossing has your first jumps over water, Log Bridge introduces narrow wooden bridges, and Forest Flow links everything together into one smooth, fast run.

Then you climb up into the alpine meadows. Meadow Climb and Cow Pasture are all about long uphill drags and rolling grass, Summit Push takes you right to the top of the mountain, Glacier Creek has icy blue streams to jump, and Alpine Express is a long, quick descent back to the valley.

The third world is a red rock canyon inspired by the famous desert trails of the American Southwest. Slickrock has smooth sandstone slopes, Canyon Drops sends you off ledge after ledge, Rock Garden is a jumble of boulders that tests your balance, Mesa Jumps throws you between flat-topped rocks, and Canyon Rim is a breathtaking ride along the edge of the gorge.

Finally you ride through autumn woods full of orange and red leaves. Leaf Peeper and Falling Leaves are flowing trails with lots of little jumps, Harvest Hills piles on the climbs, Timber Trail has fallen logs and bridges that collapse a moment after you touch them, and MTB Master is the final exam that mixes every skill in the game.

Trail features to master

Roots and rocks shake the bike and can knock your weight off balance, so keep a light touch on the lean keys and let the suspension soak up the bumps. Drops are sudden ledges: approach them with a little speed and lean back slightly so the back wheel lands first or both wheels land together. Dirt jumps are smooth lumps of earth that launch you into the air, and the faster you hit them the further you fly.

Creek gaps are the scary ones. If you don't carry enough speed, you will splash into the water and restart from the last flag. Collapsing bridges drop a moment after you ride onto them, so never stop in the middle. Steep climbs are where your pedal power really matters: lean forward to keep the front wheel on the ground, and if you start slowing down, pedal steadily rather than stopping and starting.

Flips, stars and your ghost rider

Every complete backflip or frontflip in the air knocks one second off your finish time. Pull a flip off a big dirt jump and you can beat the three-star time with room to spare. Just remember that a crash costs more time than a flip saves, so only flip when you are confident you will land on your wheels.

Finish quickly for three stars. Stars unlock six bike colours: Trail Green, River Blue, Fox Orange, Red Rocket, Berry Purple and the Gold Medal bike for true champions. Your best ride on each trail is replayed as a see-through ghost bike, so you can race against yourself and see exactly where you lost time.

Tips for faster times

Look ahead. The camera shows what is coming, so start pedalling before a climb and ease off before a big drop. Keep your bike level in the air by tapping the lean keys rather than holding them. Land on downhill slopes when you can, because landing on a down slope keeps your speed. On rocky sections, keep pedalling gently instead of braking. And if you are stuck on a tricky section, use the R key to jump back to the last flag and try a different line.

A great game for young riders

Mountain Bike Racer is designed for players of all ages. There is no violence, crashes are cartoon tumbles, and the first trails are gentle enough for younger children who are just learning to use the arrow keys. Older players and grown-ups can chase three stars on every trail and shave tenths of a second off their best times. It is a fun way for kids who love cycling to enjoy the thrill of mountain biking from home.

Play anywhere

The game runs in any modern browser on computers, Chromebooks, tablets and phones, with no download and no account. Use the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard, or the round touch buttons on a touchscreen. Your stars, best times and ghosts are saved only in your own browser. See the Parents & Safety page for more.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mountain Bike Racer free?

Yes. It is a free mountain bike racing game that runs in a web browser with no download, account or plugin.

How do I get up steep hills?

Carry speed into the climb, keep pedalling steadily and lean forward so the front wheel stays on the ground. A mountain bike has less power than a motorbike, so momentum from the descent before really helps.

How many trails are there?

There are 20 trails in four worlds: pine forest, alpine meadows, red rock canyon and autumn woods. Each trail can earn up to three stars.

Do flips help?

Yes. Every complete backflip or frontflip takes one second off your time, as long as you land on your wheels.

What happens if I crash?

Your rider tumbles and you restart from the last checkpoint flag. You can also press R at any time to go back to the flag.

Is it like the Mountain Bike Racer game on Math Playground?

It is the same kind of side-view mountain bike racing game, with pedal, brake and lean controls, jumps and timed trails. This version has its own 20 trails in four worlds, flips that cut your time, six bike colours and a ghost of your best ride.

Does it work on phones, tablets and Chromebooks?

Yes. Use the keyboard on computers and Chromebooks, or the on-screen buttons on phones and tablets.
